The power of excellence.
I learnt a powerful corporate lesson from a cooking competition I watched over the weekend. Two teams of highly trained chefs were going head to head for a chance at a grand prize running into thousands of dollars.
On one of the teams, there was an underrated chef, chosen last because he had no shiny culinary awards to his name. During his team's meal preparation, he was assigned the most unflattering of all the tasks, making the potato dish. That was a task that was almost guaranteed to drown his skills as a chef in obscurity.
This guy said something that struck me. "My only contribution to the 3-course meal is to make the potato dish. But what I'm going to do is make the best potatoes the judges have ever tasted." And then he went ahead to do just that!
In the end, the judges of the competition rated his dish the star of the meal and his team won that specific challenge because of him.
The lesson here is that it doesn't matter what your role is within your organisation. If you do it excellently, you will get the recognition you deserve, either within the same organisation or elsewhere.
Someone is always watching.
I hope this inspires you to keep striving for excellence.
