What an incredibly provocative, personal and productive conversation today hosted by Jenna Leyton-Jones & Danielle Pener. Dan Kuang and I were asked to share some insights around #DEI in workplace investigations. Danielle crafted a remarkable list of introspective questions, prompting the group to share deeply powerful perspectives and experiences. A crucial insight often overlooked amidst the recent critiques aimed at undermining DEI efforts is the distinct nature of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Each represents a unique aspect of organizational health. Unfortunately, the term 'DEI' is frequently mischaracterized, repackaged, and misrepresented as a contemporary scapegoat for a variety of issues, detracting from its fundamental importance for corporate governance and overall productivity. DEI efforts in the workplace affect individuals, teams, and departments differently. Workplace investigators walk a line between their own identities and the cases they are working on. It is essential for these investigators to have an understanding of what their own biases are (because if you have a brain, you have bias!) and not allow those biases to interfere?with their investigation. In these situations, our dimensions of diversity model?comes into play; being able to recognize we all have various dimensions of our diversity story and seeing those in the client and their situation can allow for a thorough and fair investigation. Workplace investigations help employers determine whether misconduct occurred. However, the investigation process often escalates uncertainty and distrust among the people directly and indirectly involved. This is frequently overlooked and needs to be addressed after the investigation.
