This documentary on the state of #water #infrastructure in #newzealand is a must watch for every citizen of this beautiful land. Firstly, kudos to John Campbell and 1 news for producing it. It is succinct and simple enough for most people to understand. Secondly, it focusses on the problems of water infrastructure in Aotearoa, which supplies context: this is a small country with abundant freshwater resources, and a relatively high level of development, but still the problem is manifestly large. Thirdly, it makes the need for a comprehensive solution apparent. So, one might ask, what can be done? The #solution has to stand on a tripod of Technology, Policy & Finance. Follow Alimentary Systems if this subject is of interest to you, and you'd like to know more about our work. https://lnkd.in/g-2idrKK

Join us for the complimentary webinar, “Assessing Wetlands and Protection Challenges in BC,” as our Environmental Science (ENS) experts discuss wetland stewardship on September 19th. Our Senior Project Biologist, Carolyn Prentice, and Operations Manager, Brennan Anstey, will provide an overview of what a wetland is, why it is valuable, what the common assessment techniques are, how they are regulated, and why they are often overlooked and missed. Wetlands are almost everywhere and come in different forms. They are often viewed as interfering with preferred land uses and are filled to put the land to "better" use. Defining wetlands and identifying if they are present relies on scientific and regulatory approaches. We will describe wetland indicators that are used to make that determination and relate this to wetland functions and the value they have in the watershed for preserving healthy ecosystems. Land development planning stretches retaining wetlands because of pressure for increased housing, infrastructure, and growth management. Wetland stewardship has various challenges, and we will discuss what this means for competing interests and prioritizing land management options. Economic development is important to all regions. But it needs to be in balance with stewardship of natural resources. Inadvertent releases (frac-outs) happen, but there should be lessons learned, so that they aren't happening repeatedly on a single project. I don't understand the decision to shift from HDD to open-cut, when the USFWS permit did not even allow open-cut trenching. https://lnkd.in/e7MevyrQ

Over forty years ago, Arizona took an important step toward long-term water security with the Groundwater Management Act. The act focused on the state’s most populous areas, leaving rural groundwater largely unmanaged. Today, protecting rural groundwater is one of Arizona’s top priorities, and one of its thorniest challenges. The film Agriculture and Water in the West: A Community Takes Charge, developed by the Babbitt Center for Land and Water Policy and the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy in partnership with the Arizona Water Innovation Initiative’s Impact Water-Arizona program, documents the work of one community collaboratively addressing its groundwater issues after years of conflict. https://lnkd.in/gFQDC3vx #groundwater #AZwater
