Your dream is about what’s in your heart to do in your community. It does not have to look any certain way. It does not have to look like the way it works in another city. It does not have to fit in a box. In fact, your dream will take several twists and turns… and that’s normal! :) Your dream is the WHAT. Keep doing the work and the HOW will unfold. Here are a few stories to inspire you from our neck of the woods. Shasta Mutual Aid distributes resources on a no-questions-asked basis. They are all volunteers who are committed to showing up for their community every Saturday at a park in Redding. We have a new anti-racist children’s book collection in the library. A passionate individual coordinated and crowd-funded the endeavour and now the community has a fantastic opportunity for children, teens and adults to learn to view the world in healthier ways. Our new Children’s Legacy Center is a collaboration between law enforcement, the medical community, child welfare services and other child advocates. It was created to, among other things, protect children from being re-traumatized by the lengthy process that follows reporting abuse. Our community can now better serve the needs of this vulnerable population because a group of passionate professionals dared to create and pursue a bold vision for change. #activism #nonprofit #socent #antiracism

In a world where you can be anything, choose to be KIND. Recently our country has been hit by a disaster that has left many people homeless, scores dead and others unaccounted for. As HRs, it's our responsibility to lead the management in appreciating the culture of compassion and empathy for our staff who may have been affected by the tragedies in one way or the other. Let's share food, nonfood items with the victims who are currently in dire need of help. Let's sustain the "H" in HRM and make the world a better place. If the budget allows, this is the best time to carry out that CSR you have budgeted for. Let us embrace ubuntu spirit: "we are because you are". #hr #humanity

Total full circle moment! We’ve just launched the strategic planning process for the Ottawa Food Bank. The full circle moment: Ayoub (my brother and partner in goodness) and I used to volunteer there growing up! ?? Before he was born, our family used to use their services! ?????? Now, I come home to this newsletter from my community association, inviting me to volunteer in a different way. Like many of the organizations I feel fortunate to work with, I like highlighting their work, so here it is: ?? The Ottawa Food Bank is more than just a food supplier; it’s the backbone of a vast network of community partners, including food programs, emergency shelters, community housing, and more. Having worked with a lot of its partners, it feels like I'm seeing another piece of the puzzle which as a systems thinker, I'm so grateful for! ?? ??They support 112 member agencies across the city, ensuring that vulnerable community members have access to nutritious food. Their reach extends far beyond their own walls, leveraging partnerships to amplify impact and address food insecurity on a larger scale so we've employed a process that allows us to capture the input from everyone! ??Finally, last fall I was mindblown by their Hunger Report (link in comments). It is one of the best communication tools I've seen. It’s not just a report; it’s an incredibly effective way to communicate the realities of food insecurity in Ottawa. The report captures data, personal stories, and the broader systemic issues, making it a powerful tool to inform, engage, and mobilize the community. It is also visually captivating and has inspired a lot of how I do things. Blessed Thursday! #foodinsecurity #nonprofit #volunteer #community Sayid Consulting Inc.

? In Praise of the Shelter Midnight Shift Recently, I spent a week working the midnight shift at an all-volunteer hypothermia shelter. Many aspects of it were challenging. I had forgotten how challenging it could be. The first challenge was staying awake. I arrived for my shift after “lights out” so it was relatively quiet. Around 4:30 am I made lunches for the guests so they would have food for the day. Lots of sandwiches, lots of snacks, etc. At 5am a small crew was supposed to come in and prepare breakfast and at 6am I woke everyone up, made sure they took the time to eat, and were ready to depart on a shuttle bus at 7am. They were usually there but not always, which left me scrambling. A few matters that occurred to me were the need to: 1.?????Bring your own structure for the times when you are not tasked. You need to do rounds. Regularly. 2.?????You only have your (likely limited) training and conscience to guide your actions with guests at 3:30 in the morning when and where no one can see how you interact with guests. 3.?????Stay awake. Did I mention that? A lot happens in shelters at night. The shelter where I was volunteering was not as low-barrier as compared to other shelters where I have experience. I had a few challenges but nothing like I have seen in low-barrier shelters where the challenges can be more significant. So, with all this in mind, I offer the following to the midnight shift: 1.?????Thank you! For staying up all night and getting job done. 2.?????Thank you! For doing rounds and making sure the guests can rest. 3.?????Thank you! For deescalating countless tough situations. It is easy to take this shift for granted since they are invisible in a way. They do not interact with shelter administration, supervisors, or volunteers, and are generally out of sight. So, once again, thanks! #Homelessness?#HaltHomelessness?#Homeless Bill Gorman Alacritas Advisers, LLC 410-253-1245 [email protected]

Re: Food Insecurity Amongst our Aging Population I agree in some respects with the post below, but I would also say from my experience, senior food insecurity and perceptions are incredibly community dependent. In our rural communities, many seniors lack the proper transportation or means to travel to local food pantries or even the grocery store (if there is one nearby). I think focusing on just stigma and perception (although very important) only tells part of a much larger story of inequalitable access for our aging population. Programs that deliver food to home bound seniors as choice model are critical, as are programs that provide transportation to our seniors. Additionally, our aging population often lacks the technological resources to gain knowledge of what food access programs are offered. Spreading awareness in locations seniors often frequent using flyers or tabling is helpful. A simple conversation can go a long way. Mailing the information is also an example of an accessible way to help information reach our seniors. Keep in mind, each community is different and often requires a different approach, so ask your community what they need. Your community members are the experts on their own needs! #foodsecurity #seniors #rural #community
60% of food-insecure seniors DON'T get help. Why? It’s not lack of access. It’s about perception. Older adults opt-out of food assistance due to: ? Stigma around social assistance ? Ingrained values of self-sufficiency ? Not identifying as ‘needy’ or ‘food insecure’ What's interesting? A higher percent take part in garden programs. Gardening is a proactive, empowering and community-minded option. To support food-insecure older adults, food assistance has to be reframed as a service rather than charity. This means food access that is: ??Destigmatized ??Socially acceptable ??Connected to community ??Supportive of local food economy The emphasis has to be community and dignity. ???? How can we reimagine support to reduce stigma? -- ?? Reshare if this resonates!
