Technology can feel like a necessary evil in the work that we do as veterinary care providers. From keeping medical records to maintaining our practice's online presence and communicating with clients and team members, technology has become increasingly ubiquitous over time. If you're feeling overwhelmed by tech, here are a few tips to help you disconnect from work: 1. Turn off notifications such as buzzing, beeping, vibration, or flashing lights. Pause before picking up your phone to consider if it's really important. 2. Turn your data off, use airplane mode, or turn off your phone altogether during periods of the day to prevent messages and notifications from coming through. 3. Try "batching" screen time rather than checking your phone, social media, or email repeatedly throughout the day. 4. Take a digital detox by allocating time during which you take a break from technology. If you can go on a walk and leave your phone at home, then do so! 5. Be intentional when using technology. If you find yourself in a fog and not actually focused on the screen, redirect your attention or purposefully switch to a different activity. Bonus Tip: Try enjoying your morning coffee, lunch break, or a few moments outside (without your phone, a podcast, or another screen) and see how it feels! When you say someone is a “good calf person” you’re likely saying that they’re good at reading calf behavior. What if we had tools that helped these folks succeed? Technologies that detect and flag calf behavior are utilized extensively in calf research and are now emerging in the commercial space. So what are some of these technologies and are they effective? ?? Video cameras are used to monitor calf social, stress, and feeding behaviors. Typical systems require manual human observation, but recent research is working to develop machine learning models to predict behaviors from images with accuracy between 84-99%. (Dissanayake et al 2024, Carslake et al. 2020). ??Calves with pneumonia fed via autofeeders will have lower drinking speeds, fewer visits, and reduced intakes. Machine learning algorithms can detect these changed behaviors, accurately predicting respiratory disease up to 6 days before clinical diagnosis! (Cantor et al. 2022) ??Calf location, movement, and/or drinking speed can be detected and classified using leg, neck, or ear monitors with high accuracy (94%), high specificity (96%) and moderate sensitivity (64%, Roland et al 2018, Merck Animal Health data). Commercial ear tag monitors can detect calf drinking and postural behavior and visibly flag calves that are “abnormal” vs baseline, leading to opportunities for improved calf health and labor efficiency. Whether you’re a “good calf person” looking for tools in your toolbox or an employer who is trying to develop the next “good calf person,” behavioral technology might be your solution.
