Supporting teachers is a key initiative to improving education in South Africa
The incoming Minister of Basic Education Siviwe Gwarube recently tabled her department’s focus areas and strategies to improve access to quality of basic education in SA. To give insight and commentary, Gail Campbell, our CEO at Zenex Foundation, joined clarence ford from Cape Talk Radio to expand more on strategic priorities for this administration and what the focus areas should be to ensure that our education system equips our children and teachers for future prosperity. Thanks Ben McCormack and Adam Fullwood for some fantastic tips to use in COP / housing crossover scenarios.
Yesterday evening I attended Garden Court North Chambers with Leanne Gibson for an insightful CoPPA North West event. The session covered ‘What happens when a care provider gives notice to P?’ which is a highly relevant consideration in our current cases and allowed us to take away some practical tips to be used in everyday practice. Looking forward to the next event!

The JAFSCD published "Toward a Justice Approach to Emergency Food Assistance and Food Waste: Exploring Pantry-Urban Gardener Partnerships in California's Santa Clara County," which Chris Bacon, Emma McCurry, Christopher McNeil, and I co-authored! In the article, we explore how food pantries and urban gardens could partner to trans-form pantries into distribution sites that also become food justice education and organizing spaces. ?? Got my first Letter to the Editor published this week by the SF Chronicle. ?? Letters: Here’s what Gov. Newsom’s proposed budget cuts will do to the arts. It’s not pretty Regarding?“ ‘Devastating and disappointing’: Newsom’s proposed budget cuts to the arts would place California 45th nationwide” (Arts & Entertainment, SFChronicle.com, May 17): Gov. Gavin Newsom’s proposed budget cuts to the arts and a 38% reduction in funding to the California Arts Council is a significant setback for the state. The Latino Community Foundation recently administered the Pilot Creative Corps Program, an initiative through the council that sought to leverage the arts to increase public awareness about climate mitigation, relief and recovery. With state resources, the foundation funded 28 nonprofit organizations to catalyze civic engagement and invest in the creative economy. At least 60% of the funds went directly to salaries for artists, crucial for sustaining them, their families and our communities. Funding cuts to these programs undermine the essential role of artists in our communities and damage California’s economy. We call on Gov. Newsom to reconsider these devastating cuts. I encourage anyone interested in the future of pets and people to join Ellen Jefferson, DVM, Vincent Medley, and myself for this meaningful conversation. We will discuss the importance of expanding how we measure (and promote) success and impact beyond (but including) the save rate to include our broader impact on communities and people. Much like my last sentence, the issues we seek to address are complex (yet nuanced), and success will never be accurately measured by a single metric. So how should we measure success? I'm not completely sure yet, but I'd love you to join us as we talk about it!
Join us live TODAY at 5 p.m. CT for our next webinar, "Beyond the Save Rate: Integrating People into the Sheltering Equation." This discussion will focus on how the industry can address root causes and expand how we approach measuring success—featuring Dr. Ellen Jefferson, President and CEO of Austin Pets Alive!, and Cole Wakefield, Executive Director of The Good Shepherd Humane Society. After the live event, a recording will be distributed to all registrants within 3 business days. Register here: https://bit.ly/49wfHq5
