In the U.S., children typically "age out" of the foster care system when they turn 18, though this can vary slightly by state. Some states have extended foster care programs, allowing young adults to remain in the system until age 21. Depending on their circumstances, and being enrolled in school, working, or receiving vocational training, these foster children had nowhere to go. This extension aims to provide additional support as they transition to adulthood, particularly in housing and education, crucial to gaining employment assistance. However, many youths still face challenges when they age out, such as housing insecurity and limited access to support systems. We understand this trend and it is a significant problem throughout the country. As of the most recent data (2022), there were approximately 391,000 children in foster care in the United States. The number of children in foster care can fluctuate year to year due to various factors, including family reunification, adoption, and new entries into care system.
