Our hearts are heavy for all affected by Hurricane Helene across the Southeast and here in the Carolinas. Although it is too early to know the full extent of the devastation, we are comforted by the power of community we’re witnessing, from grassroots mutual aid networks taking shape to outpourings of financial support from across the nation. Many of you have asked us how you can help. As local communities and organizations are best positioned to know what their communities need regarding relief and recovery efforts, we have compiled a running resource collection aggregating funds, support opportunities, and relief projects based in WNC and Upstate SC: ??https://lnkd.in/ekuSjnbe (also linked in bio). As rescue and recovery efforts are still actively evolving, this is by no means an exhaustive resource, but rather a living document that will be updated regularly by the CFSA team as information continues to become available. In the coming days and weeks, we will be mobilizing outreach efforts to farmers, food businesses, and food hubs in the affected communities and will keep our network updated as we develop strategies focused on longterm recovery. Know that CFSA is here for you and working as always for farmers across the Carolinas. IMPORTANT FOR FARMERS: CAMERAS BEFORE CHAINSAWS. Take photos and notes to thoroughly document all damage to your operation before you begin any cleanup or recovery work, and report damage to your local USDA service office as soon as is possible. More resources for farmers available via the link above. #CarolinaStrong #helenerelief #tshelene #hurricanehelene #helene #cfsa #supportlocalfarms #AppalachianStrong #MountainStrong #HighCountryStrong #WNC #NCStrong #UpstateSC #GreenvilleSC #YeahThatGreenville #SouthCarolina

While I am not from North Carolina, it is where I have spent the last 4 years working, and is home to many people I care deeply about. Like many, I've been feeling heartbroken. Late last week Hurricane Helene hit Western North Carolina particularly hard. The region has been impacted by severe flooding, major road and structural damage, power and cell service outages, and lack of potable water with the number of people impacted in the hundreds of thousands and a death count that is likely to increase in the coming days. Somehow that doesn't scratch the level of need that exists right now, with a recovery period that is almost certain to be prolonged. I am grateful that my staff, community partners, and friends are accounted for. I'm feeling hopeful as I see North Carolina neighbors mobilizing to help each other. The State, FEMA, and National Guard have also launched a massive response. But the need is so great and the risk of exacerbating existing inequities in access, health, and wealth heightened. There are so many ways to pitch in right now from afar, but it is also important to me that aid and relief efforts do not inflict harm (with examples of this too numerous to count). I tend to favor local, verified organizations that know their communities the best over external ones (with several resources in the article linked). I will continue to highlight some community organizations doing excellent work, many of whom employ community health workers to reach those most vulnerable. https://lnkd.in/eJ4YVh3U

It's easy to feel helpless when disaster strikes. It's an even worse feeling when you are half a continent away but your heart is still aching from video coming out of the affected area. But, like Mr. Rogers said, look to the helpers. The Los Angeles wildfires have shown us that disasters and destruction affect all levels of wealth and social standing, and thousands can be displaced by a blast of wind changing direction. But immediately, the helpers were mobilized. Not just the water bombers from Quebec and Mexico, but neighbours who tried to help with evacuations. People donating a year's worth of supplies in a day to help the shelters with the pets found or dropped off for safety. 200 emergency fosters found for shelter dogs in the path of the fires. Steve Guttenberg helping the LAFD move vehicles blocking the road. In Peterborough County, the possibility of a wildfire of such magnitude is low, but never zero. We have more weather-related causes of catastrophe; tornadoes, ice storms, floods are all things we've experienced in the last few decades. But we also know that when the going gets tough, the tough come out to help their communities. We have just over 150 volunteers with Emergency Management sills listed. Our friends at Rotary, Lions, Kinsmen and more don't just throw parades and spelling bees. They mobilize to help where it's needed. Be prepared, but be comforted. We get through it together. #DisasterManagement #CanItHappenHere #EmergencyPrepared #Community (Water Bomber picture from Gov't of Quebec. We salute you, you beautiful masters of the sky.)

Soon, D-SNAP will help those impacted by Hurricane Helene — heralded as the worst hurricane of the modern era. With each passing year, people in America have experienced some of the costliest and most destructive storms on record. The climate crisis is increasing the frequency, intensity, and destruction of extreme weather events across the U.S. Hunger is compounded by disasters and emergencies that affect food distribution, including extreme weather events, and D-SNAP fills the gap by providing participants with emergency benefits for food.? ?D-SNAP participants ordinarily are not eligible for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the nation’s first line of defense against hunger used by over 40 million people every month. D-SNAP is available to eligible people who live, and in some cases work, in the area impacted by a disaster, who lose income, incur expenses, or face food spoilage. Hurricane-to-Topical Storm #Debby slows to a crawl, dumping torrential rain across #Florida, #Georgia, #SouthCarolina, and #NorthCarolina. This extreme water volume in such a short time is heavily hampering rescue and relief efforts. American Red Cross #volunteer and staff teams are staged and operating in each of the noted states, working with #community partners to provide shelter, food, water, family reunification, pet assistance, disaster mental health services, clean-up supply distribution, #home damage assessment, and more. Your help in keeping us there longer and providing more assistance is greatly needed. Areas still recovering from disasters a year ago like #HurricaneDorian and #HurricaneIdalia in Florida have no reprieve; people in all of these areas need us: RedCross.org/HELP. #DisasterResponse #DisasterRelief #RedCross Photo and article: NY Times-Breaking News and https://lnkd.in/gj3fg-DU.

After Hurricane Helene brought devastation, Waste Pro and partners stepped up to support the hardest-hit areas in Steinhatchee, FL. With the help of Fishin' For Vision and Cowboyz Catering, they delivered essential supplies and served meals to over 300 people, demonstrating immense community dedication. ????? The storm left a trail of destruction with at least 252 fatalities across multiple states. Communities like Steinhatchee, isolated and severely damaged, continue to struggle without power and basic utilities. In the words of Dayna Williams, Waste Pro’s Director of Government Relations, “This is what we do at Waste Pro; we care for our communities.” Despite their own losses, Waste Pro's team showed resilience and compassion, reinforcing the crucial role of local initiative during such crises. This effort underscores the importance of corporate responsibility in disaster response. How can businesses further integrate community care into their disaster management plans? #HurricaneHelene #DisasterRelief #CommunitySupport #CorporateResponsibility #WasteManagement ??
