What is the difference between Classification Societies and Recognized Organizations? During a quick assessment, it is surprising to us to learn that still persons in the maritime industry that believes that Classification Societies and Recognized Organizations are the same and have the same duties; therefore, we decided to bring some clarity on this topic. Classification Societies can become Recognized Organizations if a Flag State delegate the authority for the performance of statutory certification in compliance with the RO Code, but…. CLASSIFICATION SOCIETIES are organizations which develop and apply technical standards for the design, construction and survey of ship and which carry out survey and inspections on board ships, but using its own standards which are applied to the building, maintenance and equipment installed on a ship. Upon satisfactory completion, it is expected that a ship will be assigned with class notations for hull and machinery and be certified accordingly. RECOGNIZED ORGANIZATIONS means an organization that has been assessed by a flag State and found to comply with the RO Code for the conducting of statutory certification under mandatory IMO instruments (i.e. SOLAS, MARPOL, Load Lines, etc.) with the intention to maintain ships flying their flag within the standards. In short, Classification Societies have their own standards while Recognized Organizations follow mandatory IMO Instruments. Please provide us with your thoughts if you like to expand on this topic.

Did you know? Welding and grinding activities release toxic fumes that can be DEADLY. ?? According to the American Welding Society, many workers are exposed to welding fumes each year, leading to severe health complications. ?? Facts: The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) reports that welders face a significantly higher risk of developing lung cancer due to exposure to chromium and nickel compounds found in welding fumes. Why should you be alarmed? ?? 1?? Health Crisis: Welding fumes contain carcinogens like hexavalent chromium, increasing the risk of respiratory diseases and cancer among workers. 2?? Legal Liability: Failure to comply with OSHA standards on air quality can result in fines and legal consequences for employers. 3?? Human Cost: Behind every statistic lies a human story. Let's protect our workers from preventable health hazards! Join us in raising awareness and taking action for safer workplaces. Together, we can make a difference! ?? #WorkplaceSafety #FumeExtraction #CleanAirRevolution #OSHACompliance #HealthandSafety #KAISEN References: https://www.aws.org/ https://lnkd.in/gqwWBuyk

???? Recent Boeing Incident: Lessons Learned in Quality Engineering ???? ? In light of the recent near-catastrophic incident involving an Alaska Airlines Boeing air plane the panel mid-cabin exit door plug blew out , highlights a critical juncture for Quality Engineering. As we reflect on the event, let's consider key lessons: ? ?Quality & Culture: A strong safety culture is the backbone of quality engineering. The schism between management and floor employees can undermine product integrity. ??Vigilance in QC: Every detail matters. Quality control must be exhaustive and continuous to prevent 'quality escapes'. ??Collective Responsibility: Quality is not a department but a collective ethos. Every team member must feel empowered to uphold standards. ?Learning from Setbacks: Incidents must catalyze improvements, not just fixes. It's an opportunity for systemic change. Do comment on below what should be done better which have prevented this incidents. More analysis on this incident from quality perspective in upcoming post.?

Mid-Atlantic Regional Maintenance Center (MARMC) has been faced with new challenges amidst the growing complexities of ship readiness operations. However, MARMC has been responsive and ready to tackle these challenges through equipment and building upgrades. The initiative, which began October 2021 within Building CEP-200, was part of Commander, Navy Regional Maintenance Center’s (CNRMC) strategic phased replacement plan for Industrial Plant Equipment (IPE) at MARMC. Mark Hansen, equipment manager at MARMC, highlighted several recent equipment upgrades, including the Lasertec 65 Directed Energy Deposition (DED) hybrid metal additive manufacturing machine saying, “The Lasertec 65 is an absolute game-changer in the way we maintain the Fleet. The machine allows for fast, precise, and cost-effective repairs by leveraging a hybrid of additive and subtractive technologies. The goal is to utilize the machine for additive repairs of expensive, long lead time or obsolete parts. It will truly be a paradigm shift in the way we do maintenance which will result in significant cost savings for the Navy.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/eDXVjjFW
