A letter to my past self ??.. and to any new grads who find this helpful- I share this because transparently - I had no idea what I was doing when I got out of school. I threw the "usual" interventions out for back pain, plantar fasciitis, shoulder pain. I got stuck sometimes, but I'd attribute it to just having some "tricky" patients or asking a coworker. Honestly, I didn't know the outcome of more than a few patients at a time because I'd evaluate patients and they'd get scheduled on someone else's caseload. It wasn't until I started my own practice and saw everyone 100% that I realized (..admitted) I had so many questions. And I was promised mentorship at my first job. But when that fell through, I left it as an excuse to not have mentorship instead of seeking it myself. Instead of going from point A to point B, time passed and I landed somewhere in point C- which if you're wondering, is not confident bad ass therapist ??. I let the time pass and assumed that if I waited long enough, I'd get good with "experience". But it doesn't happen like that. If you want to hear more about what I did and how I changed the trajectory of my clinical career - DM me "PRA". Send this to a friend you think can relate ?? #ptdpt #physicaltherapist #newgrad #newgradpt #physicaltherapy #doctorofpt

For years, I have worked with students who were interested in majors/careers in healthcare that would have them working directly with patients or clients. Their reasons vary, some genuinely want to help people, some like the salaries. Many of them meet application requirements and do well in classes for the majors with no problem. But for some, when it's time for them to do a clinical rotation or field placement they struggle. The struggle for some is because they really didn't realize what it was going to be like dealing with people with physical or mental health issues (ex. seeing, smelling bodily fluids or talking to someone who has schizophrenia but won't take their meds). For others, it's a challenge to help people who's beliefs, culture, values are different to theirs. My best advice for anyone considering a career in the healthcare field is to find someone in the field you can shadow for a period of time. It will give you a realistic view of what it's like to do the work on a daily basis. While shadowing, ask yourself, can I see myself doing this daily and will I be able to handle it both physically and emotionally. As wonderful as helping professions are, they can be draining. You must be able to set and maintain healthy boundaries for yourself in order to be an effective professional. #healthcare #healthcareers #highereducation #collegestudents #workforcedevelopment #socialwork #nursing #respiratorytherapy #physicaltherapy #nutrition #occupationaltherapy #counseling #cna #physician

To all the Clinical Psychologists out there!!! Do Read and Share. It's important To all trainees, newly graduated, and experienced clinical psychologists: Our journey to earn our degrees and complete our training is incredibly challenging. The abstract knowledge we acquire through hard-earned experience allows us to delve into our patients' minds and mend the damages of the past, present, and future. No other profession matches the potential and difficulty of understanding humans without the aid of machines or measurable equipment. It is disheartening to see clinical psychologists being hired at, and accepting, very low compensation packages in the market. While other medical professions heal patients and are hired for the prestige of their degrees and established values, we are still paving the way for our own recognition. The value we set today will take decades to reach its deserved recognition. Given the rarity and profound impact of our expertise, why do we settle for less? Our market value should reflect the unique and vital work we do. I urge all fellow psychologists, counselors, and clinicians to never settle for less and always advocate for your true worth during negotiations with HR. Based on your experiences, confidently position yourself as a highly valued medical professional. The world acknowledges that mental health is real, and a significant portion of work is dedicated to addressing it. Let’s pave the path for new trainees and psychologists, ensuring our profession receives the recognition it truly deserves. Together, we can elevate the standards and value of our vital work. Feel free to make any further adjustments and share. but do share to address the wakening as a critical need of the time. #mentalhealth #profession #clinicalpsychologist #psychologist #psychology #timetowakeup

?? Make Your Non-Clinical Experience Count: Tips for Assistant Psychologist Applications ?? If you're a new graduate or lack clinical experience, don't be afraid to take advantage of your non-clinical experience. When I was applying for AP posts, particularly early on, I highlighted my marketing experience, which brought me numerous transferable skills, such as working under pressure, under strict deadlines, and managing large (CRM) databases. ?? Here's how you can showcase core AP competencies through some non-clinical roles: ? Customer Service: - Handling emotional distress - De-escalation skills - Professional boundaries - Adapting communication styles - Working with diverse populations ? Academic Projects: - Research methodology - Data analysis - Report writing - Literature reviews ? Volunteering: - Supporting vulnerable individuals - Safeguarding awareness - Working in helping relationships - Understanding confidentiality ? Teaching/Education: - Behaviour management - Assessment skills - Group facilitation - Adapting communication ? Care Work: - Direct support experience - Risk management - Person-centered care - MDT working - Care planning ?? In your application, use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to demonstrate how these experiences map to NHS values and relevant AP competencies of the person spec. ?? Love this! There's so much scope for psychologists to utilise their skills outside of the standard settings. The skillset that psychologists develop within their roles like understanding human behaviour, fostering resilience, promoting communication, and building connections are invaluable outside of traditional settings! I'm working with Dr Alastair Pipkin, who is a great example of this. After 10 years in the NHS, he's just launched Unlock Psychology Ltd where he'll deliver bespoke mental health solutions to businesses. He's created a company that allows him to continue utilising his skills and deliver a much needed service outside of a clinical setting. The breadth of work speaks to the versatility of psychological skills. This expert knowledge is needed in unexpected and exciting places in a world that increasingly values mental health and human connection. If you're a psychologist working outside traditional settings, I'd love to hear your story! How are you leveraging your skills in unique ways? Let’s inspire each other to think beyond the expected. Thank you Ivan Lee for inspiring this post! #Psychology #MentalHealth #Careers #Innovation #Kaerus
Registered Clinical Psychologist (MSCP, MAHPC, SRP) - Specialized in psychological assessment, diagnosis, and intervention
I would like to dedicate this post as a reminder to all aspiring and practicing psychologists out here: YOUR ROLES CAN BE EXTENDED BEYOND THE RADIUS OF A CLINICAL SETTING. As a clinical psychologist, I've come to realize that our profession offers endless opportunities for growth and impact. Since graduating, my aspirations have evolved. Initially, my focus was on becoming a skilled clinician, adhering to professional standards, staying updated on the latest research, and fostering meaningful relationships with my clients. As I progressed, I ventured into research, recognizing its significance in informing our clinical practices. With guidance from my PhD supervisor and colleagues, I acquired the necessary skills to contribute to this field. This experience has been enlightening, as I've learned to derive subjective, individualized meaning from objective data. Currently, I'm transitioning into a career position that enables me to create broader impact, integrating clinical expertise, research, and a systemic perspective. While still in its early stages, this journey has shown me that clinical psychologists can achieve far more than I initially expected. Our skillsets may vary across roles, but our capacity for growth and impact is vast. By embracing opportunities, practicing within our means, and expanding our reach credibly, while upholding professionalism and ethics, we can achieve greatness. Remember that passion that gets you here in the first place; ensure it's well sustained and expanded for the benefit of the people we serve and most importantly, the benefit of our own. 2 cents. #mentalhealth #mentalhealthprofessionals #psychology #clinicalpsychologist #reflection #learning #thinkthoughts #linkedin

DVA is not associated with this job posting Backpack Healthcare- Residency Program USA https://lnkd.in/gMauUPbU Residency Program Overview With over 40,000 graduates from social work and counseling profession each year, there are lots of new clinicians coming into the field, however, over 57% of those never become licensed. The Residency program, created by Backpack Healthcare, is a 24-month training program for graduate-level mental health clinicians to help them achieve and maintain professional licensure. This program is composed of training from multiple LCSW-C and LCPC supervisors with various specialties and experiences. Backpack’s residency program guarantees weekly individual supervision with a trained and board certified supervisor. We also facilitate weekly group supervision (synchronous and asynchronous depending on the week) that will also qualify for supervision hours towards board requirements. Groups are currently pending APA, ACA, and NASW approval for Category I continuing education credits. Within each cohort, we aim to create a network of individuals of similar licensure looking to collaboratively learn how to be the most effective, well-rounded, and culturally humble clinicians. Residents will reaffirm their knowledge of theory and learn related techniques to implement in practice, the area that is most difficult for clinicians and one that is not often focused on during education. Upon completion, residents will successfully treat patients with a variety of mental health diagnoses, apply ethical standards to their practice, assess for risk, treatment plan, and advocate for patients within the community, as well as have a reference guide of interventions and activities to implement in sessions. Key Features: Dedicated preparation for LCSW licensing examination, all informed by NASW’s knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA) guidelines Theoretical Orientation Development Diagnosing and Treating common DSM-V TR diagnoses Application of skills for the therapy space Collaborating with other professionals, including working as a treatment team at Backpack. Profession-specific training in accordance with the NASW and ACA codes of ethics Potential for free continuing education credits throughout the program Weekly individual and group supervision for direct feedback on daily clinical practice- 100+ individual supervision and 70+ group supervision hours (or CEU opportunities) guaranteed. Supportive and collaborative environment for peer and professional consultation #hr #jobinterview #hiringnow #vacancy #jobshiring

UPDATE - I’m afraid I can’t take on any more applications for now but please see my blog post for general tips. Best of luck everyone, and remember that this absolutely does not define you as a person. Also, I am always looking to improve my knowledge and understanding in this area, especially with an awareness of my own privilege. I’m sure I have a lot of blind spots that I want to reflect on and challenge. I’d really welcome any further guidance from people about how I can continue to support and challenge more widely in the field also. Attention aspiring clinical psychologists! If you're applying to the doctorate this year and identify as being from a disadvantaged or marginalised background, and don't have access to a clinical psychologist supervisor, please reach out to me! I'm offering a couple of spaces to support individuals with their doctorate application. I am very aware of the privelege and vicious cycle that exists in this field whereby many people are not in a position to work for free for Assistant Psychologist posts (not that honorary posts should exist at all in my view), are discriminated against in applying for relevant work experience or academia, or might not have access to other professionals who can assist with the process. I want to level the playing field and encourage much-needed diversity in our profession. Please comment below as unfortunately it’ll be a first-come first-served situation. I have also written a blog on LinkedIn full of general application tips which is accessible to everybody. #clinicalpsychology #doctorateapplication #mentorship #support #diversity
