I consult and provide specialty expertise on making plain the edges & challenges of program management, workforce agility, performance improvement, & cybersecurity. I know, I’m narrowing that list down.
EDGES OF THE RETIREMENT 5 “The unhappiest people of the world are those in the international watering places like the South Coast of France, and Newport, and Palm Springs, and Palm Beach." --Nixon I may not agree with Nixon, but I get his point. I've talked a lot about the kernel of belief. That to work for an organization, to serve any sort of greater purpose -- you must hold fast to a core, kernel belief in what you're doing is right. And where you're doing it is the right place for you to be. You don't stay with an organization, habit, or practice -- for decades on end, unless you believe it's the right thing to do. Unless you believe the majority of what you do, ends up towards an achievement you want to be remembered by. We chase and crave alignment -- belief runs close with alignment. If any part of that kernel of belief cracks or fractures, you have to move. You have to get out. There's another kernel than runs with belief: the kernel of discontent. People, by design, are contextually discontent. We moderate ourselves against the numerator of what we want, over the denominator of what we have. Friends, family, fortunes, futures -- all stem and stemmed by our discontent. I'm still working with this one. Discontent drives action -- but not always driving change or improvement. I know, there's a positive way to spin this as well. Content as being the towards goal, vice discontent being the away goal -- being the thing we run away from. I get Nixon's point -- people in the best, most picturesque of places can become beset by their discontents. But I also think -- Nixon doesn't account for what it takes for those people to get where they are. Moreover, Nixon was always haunted by his own perception of discontent and inadequacy. It caused his own ultimate downfall. Retirement is a new construct. To be "retired" doesn't mean to be done. Far from it -- it means to find a new focus on belief. And a new way to frame our discontents. #military #transition #uscg #coastguard #experience

Retirement Transition Thoughts: As retirement approaches, the prospect of leaving behind a team and their accomplishments can be daunting. The question of whether retiring means letting down those you've worked with can loom large. Yet, it's important to remember that progress will continue in your absence. As a leader and follower, the personal value of your role is immense. The 354th has shaped many, and the experiences gained will be enduring. Retirement offers the opportunity to spend more time with family, who have been a constant source of support throughout the Air Force journey. As one chapter ends, another begins. #Leadership #Followership #Military #Vet #Retirement #Journey

What else should be retired? Noncompete Agreements. Gov. Hochul of NY is trying to end them in NY. Which means that lobbyists are fighting her, and we're seeing TV ads urging New Yorkers to vote against their own interests and continue living under noncompete agreements. "Should Your Ex-Boss Get a Say in Your New Job? Wall Street Says Yes." (NY Times) https://lnkd.in/enQM3nmi "How Noncompete Clauses Keep Workers Locked In." (NY Times) https://lnkd.in/eVr5ieab And before people start telling you about how this probably affects just a handful of people like hedge fund managers or something... Objection overruled. We're talking about ALL KINDS of jobs here. In some states and industries, you're talking about scenarios like fast food workers at McDonald's or KFC being legally prohibited from working at OTHER ("competing") fast food restaurants. For years. Worked at Burger King (for example)? Well, then you can't work at Wendy's or MacDonalds (for example), if you've have signed a noncompete agreement -- or some kind of "standard agreement" with a noncompete clause buried in the fine print.

I usually only create and share content related to strategic partnerships or marketing but; This post right here deserves to be seen. This is the best post I have ever seen on this topic. Props to Daniel Abrahams for being this real. #business2023

Daniel Abrahams post is a splash of water in the face for some: 1. If you ghost someone, expect the same. 2. Cover letters are now written by an AI. Why are you testing how well an AI can write? 3. Slavery is bad. 4. Let candidates self select OUT. Putting the salary in a job description clears your schedule for you. It's just supply and demand. You are buying at a price, they are selling at a price. If someone shows up, the price is good. Price should always be the last detail anyway. 5. You don't take 7 coffee dates to know if you wanna hang out for a while. 4 interview rounds is plenty. 6. Entry level job means what it means. 7. If a job was done remotely during Covid, then why are you paying for office space, and losing productivity because people spend so much time commuting? Other things that need to be retired: *No annual automatic raises. A Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) is at minimum, necessary to retain people, and is WAY cheaper than recruiting and then paying up for unknown talent. *Age discrimination. If talent is willing to meet your price, and average tenure at a company is around 2 years, why are you not meeting with older candidates? *Paying minimum wage. People need a living wage. Full stop. We all know the federal minimum wage needs to be raised. Not everyone wants to admit it, or accept it. If you can't afford it, don't be in business. *Power structures in the workplace. Everyone is a mercenary now, so playing power is a quick way to lose talent. Treat people poorly, and you'll be spending your time recruiting instead of trying to hit your goals and make your bonus. So, it's self serving to be nice and empathetic. EQ over IQ. Empathy is UNDEFEATED.
