May all the job seekers find their golden ticket, and may the leaders searching for talent find their star! While we continue to see mass layoffs affecting businesses and employees, the current state of the workplace is unsettling for many. These layoffs have also significantly affected small businesses that provide these large companies with contractors. Yet, other companies are actively searching for talent and need help finding the right candidate, and job seekers have not been placed for a long time, as we often read on LinkedIn. I share this because watching this video inspired me to think about how an interview can be life-changing. Sydnie Christmas's audition?changed her life—and also the lives of whatever agent, record label, musicians, backup singers, and producers get to work with her. She has been working the Front of House at a gym but didn’t give up on her dream job. For her audition, she performed a well-known song that Simon disliked. Her mission was to do it so well that it would change his mind, and it did. Now, because of an audition, her life is forever changed, whether she wins this contest or not. To job seekers, where can you apply to pursue your dream job? Are you so prepared that in that interview, you will change the minds of those judging you with their preset ideologies and blow them away? What can you do differently with the same old song that will make you stand out? To leaders, open your minds and do not be against what you think you need. If they are a certain age, they are not a fit. If they are a mom, they are not a fit. If they look like Big Bird, they are not a fit. If they sing this song, I'm not even listening. Listen to the audition; it may be a game-changer for your business! ?? So I'll never give up, never give in Never let a ray of doubt slip in And if I fall I'll never fail I'll just get up and try again ?? I know the job market is extremely tough right now for a lot of people, not just in the tech industry. I find music to be a great motivator and a way to express how a person is feeling when words escape you. Men of Honor was one of my favorite movies as a kid, and the song "Win" by Brian McKnight is one of the main reasons. The song is so motivational and insightful about having determination and never giving up. There are many things we can control in life, but some that we can't control is if we get hired for a position or avoid getting affected by a wave of layoffs. If you don't get the position or are a part of mass layoffs, it's not your fault...it's a growth opportunity and a lesson. I recently had the opportunity to go to the final round of interviews with a Forbes Top 20 company. While I didn't get the position, I was blessed to be in consideration and took everything I learned and applied it to my other interviews. I know that as long as I keep pushing the right opportunity will be there for me. If you pick yourself up after every fall, that's not failure...it's growth ? When the pandemic started, it hit us all like a ton of bricks....... We hoped our favorite bands would stay together... we hoped our favorite businesses would stay together, and we went through the changes that were uncomfortable.... Those with higher development in Empathy suffered, and changed more than others. Every Monday, I have the hardest days in catching up with new, RIFs, layoffs, and businesses closing. Some of these great people I know well, others I've only met passively. I wanted to ask a huge favor, in that when you see someone affected by change, reach out, and offer some help! You can: 1. Write them a recommendation of how much they rocked your life! 2. Reach out to ask how to best support them... 3. Introduce them to someone who needs their talents, help, & light. 4. Be there, bravely for the changes, & adjustment period. The biggest part of our work is getting people back to work.... because we do want people to win, & the for the world to be a better place. A year ago today, I started at IMAX, but due to the elimination of my role earlier this April I can’t help but compare the feeling to reeling from a bad break up - one you thought was going great when you get hit with the “we need to talk” talk. Break ups suck and layoffs are the equivalent of the “it’s not you, it’s me” line. By it's very premise, it isn’t your fault, but you question whether you could have done anything differently anyway. After all, it is human nature to desire control over such situations versus inevitably accepting that you had no choice in the matter. Personally, I miss the people I've connected with more than anything. No company is perfect but I drove through the 405 every single day, investing time, effort and energy because I got to do it with people I enjoyed working with. “Too bad, so sad” as my son would say. Many in the entertainment and media industry struggle with this as we continue to be impacted by downsizing, restructuring and layoffs. It's disheartening but you have to gather yourself and be ready to put your best self out there once again. I’ve only reached out to a few colleagues when this happened so consider this post officially putting myself out there! I am a Creative Manager, and while I do thrive in project management, I love having a creative outlet, being a creative thinker and producer. I lead with empathy and will always value people over projects. I have production and post production experience with an eye for detail and quality control. I would love to get more marketing experience or something involved in the DEI space so if you know any leads, you know where to find me! If you’ve read this far, thank you. The best people to hire realize this and know how to manage ?? ?? The ups and downs of enthusiasm. Enthusiasm can ebb and flow and that’s okay. What makes a classical musical piece captivating and enjoyable to listen to is the variation. It’s okay for our enthusiasm to ebb and flow that’s just life and that’s what makes it rich and rewarding. Good things don’t come easy. High performers know how to handle the ups and downs and not let it define them but learn how to find steady ground and perspective to increase enthusiasm. Agree?
