The KAZA Secretariat and Partner States convened in Livingstone yesterday for the 14th Ministerial Meeting, hosted by the Government of Zambia. Ministers and a Committee of Senior Officials deliberated on relevant topics concerning the KAZA TFCA, reflecting on how Partner States' collaborative efforts in the development and management of the KAZA TFCA are advancing. Some of the meeting's key outcomes include the approval of important frameworks and strategy documents for the KAZA TFCA as follows: ?- Livelihoods Diversification Strategy– a framework document to guide the programming and implementation of livelihoods in KAZA TFCA for greater impact across the landscape. - Livelihoods-focused climate risk assessment – an important tool in assessing the vulnerability of people, including biodiversity, tourism, and livelihood interventions for enhanced climate resilience and adaptation in the landscape. - Management strategy for forestry conservation – a framework document with priority forest-related interventions for programming and implementation across the KAZA TFCA. - Strategic framework for bird conservation – a framework strategy, that recognises the important bird areas and target bird species, their vulnerabilities, and required conservation and other actions for their ecological integrity and survival. Full Communiqué is available at bit.ly/4eKUImn. Also, look out for the frameworks and strategy documents to be published soon.

Did you hear about South Africa's draft National Biodiversity Economy Strategy? The South African Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) published the draft National Biodiversity Economy Strategy on 8 March 2024 for public comments. The Strategy proposes four objectives: 1. Leverage biodiversity to enhance the ecotourism industry in sea and conservation lands. 2. Promote the use of game from wildlife systems to spur transformation and conservation-compatible land use. 3. Encourage consumptive use of marine and freshwater resources to foster socio-economic development. 4. Structure the bioprospecting, biotrade, and biodiversity-based production sector to benefit communities. AWEI submitted suggestions to bolster this strategy and ensure the focus is on conserving biodiversity while ensuring benefits for all South Africans from the sustainable use of wild species and their natural habitats. What's your opinion of the strategy? FORESTRY IMPROVEMENT IDEA: OUR AFFORESTATION, REFORESTATION AND REVEGETATION PROJECT Sepik Wetlands & Peatland Limited, a Carbon Developer based in Papua New Guinea, is leading efforts to restore the environment through afforestation, reforestation, and revegetation projects. Our work involves planting native trees and vegetation to rehabilitate degraded lands, boost biodiversity, and capture carbon. These projects play a crucial role in combating climate change while providing sustainable livelihoods and safeguarding essential ecosystems for local communities. By integrating scientific research, community engagement, and traditional knowledge, we ensure the effectiveness and sustainability of our initiatives. Our mission is to transform barren landscapes into flourishing forests, fostering a greener, more resilient future for the region and beyond. #Afforestation #ClimateAction #SustainableForestry

?????????????????????? ?????????????????????? ?????? ?????????????????????????? ???? ?????? ???? ?????????????????? ?????????????????????? One thing I have noticed several times in my #conservation journey is that to have a successful community engagement, all key #stakeholders must be involved. There are times we are tempted to deal with only one party, either due to familiarity, preference, or resource constraints. However, these often lead to several issues, particularly about the project's sustainability and impact.? Let me give you an example: ?????? ???????????? ?????????????????????? ???????????????????? ?????????????? sponsored by The Explorers Club and The Philip Stephenson Foundation . Although this project deals directly with community members and fishermen within the Keta Lagoon Complex Ramsar Site, we realised that for effective monitoring, we had to fall upon the Wildlife Division of the Forestry Commission within the landscape. Not only them, but the chiefs and elders of the communities as well. These stakeholders brought new insights and different dynamics to the project that have positively impacted it. The chiefs and elders helped us with the site selection for a sea turtle hatchery; the community members acted as volunteers for sea turtle surveys, while the Forestry Commission acted as the supervising body that keeps everything running, even in our absence. True, some of these come with their own challenges, such as misunderstandings among some parties and financial constraints, among others, but the positives far outweigh the negatives. We also held joint training sessions, which further deepened the bond between them. Now, the project can run successfully with or without our direct presence in the landscape. This shows the power of stakeholder engagement and collaboration. #communityengagement Michael Ochem UN Biodiversity A Rocha Ghana African Climate Reality Project

?? REFloC Project Update: Listening to Voices from the Communities ?? This week, we held our first focus group discussions in Kpeve, Golokwati, and Goviefe Todzi, three communities in Ghana's Afadjato South and South Dayi districts in Ghana where the #Weto landscape is located. These conversations have been incredibly enriching, providing insight into how local communities perceive and respond to changes in forest health, land use, and livelihoods. The focus groups are designed to delve into how collective and individual experiences shape strategies for resilience and well-being. From stories of adaptation to expressions of concern over environmental changes, the discussions have brought to light nuanced perspectives that often remain unheard in broader policy dialogues. We also began stakeholder interviews, speaking with representatives from an environmental CSO to gain deeper insights into the connections between communities and key stakeholders involved in conservation efforts, governance, and community development. These conversations are helping us frame our findings in ways that can inform actionable solutions at multiple levels. This work is only possible because of the trust and collaboration with local communities and partners. By grounding our approach in participation and local expertise, we aim to contribute knowledge that bridges the gaps between research, policy, and practice. Last week (18-20 September 2024) I managed to attend a 3 days expert panel on NBSAPs at Pamuzinda Safaris. The expert panel consisted of various agencies from the Government of Zimbabwe which included EMA, AGRITEX, University representatives, Conservation Based Organizations and Forestry Commission. The major thrust of the 3 days caucus was hinged on revising national targets for the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) for each target of the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF). Some of my key take away points were on Target 4 which focuses on Halting Species Extinction, Protecting Genetic Diversity, & Managing Human-Wildlife Conflicts. The major action points will be hinged on developing and implementing strategies to promote sustainable management practices, reducing HWC, promoting coexistence and increasing benefits accruing to indigenous and local communities by 2030.
