We're seeking community members to participate in a research study to investigate how schools decide where to place students with disabilities in classrooms and explore the role of Local Education Agency (LEA) representatives in special education decision-making. Your insights may help improve educational practices for students with disabilities. What comes to mind when you hear of persons with Special needs? I was with a lady who claimed she studied special education recently, and the only categories of special needs she seems to know, is Deafness and Blindness. I was surprised, just as you might be. Special needs can be categorised In various needs, which include physical, Cognitive, psychological, medical, developmental, learning, communication, and behavioural needs; each of this listed categories includes diverse disabilities and conditions that affect an individual ability to function to an optimal level. What other special needs do you know aside Deafness and Blindness? #specialeducation #specialneeds #abilitynotdisability #specialeducator

Question for people in higher ed. - in speech-language therapy or similar type of fields: What type of structure/ group/ position (outside of advising and university provided disability services) do programs offer students who express needing additional support in academic and clinical experiences? Another way to ask this is if you were a recent graduate of a program, what do you wish you had as support in your department?

Special education refers to customized educational programs and services designed to meet the unique learning needs of students with disabilities or learning challenges. This can include students with physical, intellectual, emotional, or developmental disabilities. The goal of special education is to provide these students with the necessary support, resources, and strategies to succeed academically, socially, and emotionally in a school environment. Special education may involve: 1.Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) that outline specific goals, accommodations, and services for each student. Adapted curriculum or teaching methods to address the student's learning style. Support services like speech therapy, occupational therapy, or behavioral therapy. 2. Inclusive education, where students with disabilities learn alongside their peers with typical development, whenever possible, with appropriate support. #RaiseAgainstAutism #PinnacleSaysItAll #PinnacleBloomsNetwork #1AutismTherapyCentresNetwork

Interesting post from ZERO TO THREE! According to the article, children born amid the pandemic face unique developmental hurdles, with recent studies indicating potential delays in communication, motor skills, and emotional development. Yet, there's hope in neuroplasticity—the brain's ability to adapt and form new connections. Despite challenges like reduced social interactions and limited access to early intervention, children possess remarkable resilience. As therapists, we play a pivotal role by fostering enriching environments and tailored interactions. By leveraging functional everyday routines to stimulate brain development and offering targeted support, we empower children to catch up and thrive. #EarlyChildhoodIntervention #Neuroplasticity #SupportingChildren #PandemicEffects
Since the COVID pandemic, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of young children who are slow to develop language skills, with pediatric speech delays more than doubling for children aged 12 and younger. But there are good reasons to believe that any setbacks could be temporary, and that’s due to what we know about neuroplasticity: https://bit.ly/47lUugM

SPECIAL EDUCATION VOCABULARY - PART 1 Language matters, and that's especially true in the field of Special Education. Just as every other Field such as medicine, engineering, law has their vocabularies, so also Special Education. Some terms are not acceptable. Therefore,it is crucial to use appropriate language when discussing disabilities and the people who have them. Follow me as I take you through some of these terms: Normal? Regular? Take the word "normal," for example. It's not the right way to refer to people without disabilities. Instead, you should use the word "regular." For instance, you could say, "Special needs people require unique accommodations and modifications that are different from those of their REGULAR peers." This way, you avoid implying that those with disabilities are "abnormal" in any way. You can also say, "Special schools are more expensive than REGULAR Schools." This implies that there are no "abnormal" schools. We either have a regular school or a special school. Another great point is using terms like NEURODIVERGENT and NEUROTYPICAL to refer to persons with/without disability respectively. These words acknowledge that humans brains are wired differently and that there's no "right" or "wrong" way for them to function. #Specialneedsvocabulary #neurodivergent #neurotypicals #specialschools #disabiltyadvocate

Every student deserves adequate preparation for adulthood, but this necessity is particularly critical for neurodivergent students. Historically, these individuals have faced limitations due to their disabilities. Nevertheless, advancements in research and best educational approaches have equipped us with the knowledge to effectively educate neurodivergent students and empower them as lifelong learners alongside their neurotypical peers. We are changing the narrative and advocating that disability does not equate to incapability. #educationalleadership #neurodiversityaffirming #transformationalleadership #educationforall
