From Brat Summer to Founder Mode? I'm not going to get into Founder vs. Manager Mode. There is MORE than enough being written about that debate right now. (Nice long weekend, Silicon Valley?) I'm more intrigued by how some of the discourse lacks nuance or even self-awareness. In some of its phrasing the cries for founder mode sound more like excuses to not trust others and retain a belief that only you know best. I know executive headhunters, coaches and others that do a lot of work to help founders identify when they need support or balance in their teams and a lot of that work is about the individual. Not every founder is suited to scaling an organisation (alone, at all?) or suited to staying involved in the day-to-day. For each idol founder we can think of that did this successfully I am sure we can think of a toxic counterpart we wouldn't wish on anyone. It's a nice reason for founders to blame investors and hires ("professional fakers") for things going wrong but where is the grey area? #foundermode #founder #startup #tech #management #leadership
I haven't heard about this new debate. Pretty funny as I'm posting this as I sit at my favorite cafe on University Ave. in Palo Alto. I just read the article you shared in response to Jessica's question but would love to read more (or maybe, I really wouldn't?). I find that labels can be reductionist - would love to see more conversations about what isn't working, and also a restraint to apply what worked for one founder to 1,000 others. Brian Chesky tends to be a founder I admire so will look for more on the topic.
I just had an interesting conversation for my Founder Connect podcast where we discussed the challenge of discerning when it's time to move on from or shut down the company you founded. As you pointed out, leading and running a company effectively takes a lot of nuance, self-awareness, and humility!
interesting take, Kate. I think we always need be to aware of bias and nuance in embodying any particular mode, especially one that says we and only we know best. that said where can we take the good parts and combine it with other modes to find the best path forward?
I didn't know about that debate, Kate Minogue, but I agree! I think everything is about the individual's leadership skills. The truth is that those skills are not mandatory for running a venture ??
"Founder Mode" wreaks of Silicon Valley's "productivity at all costs" or "hustle mindset" or "everything else takes a back seat" mantras...and I'm not into it. There's a new future of leadership ahead and it doesn't require this all-or-nothing-but-work approach.
Amen. More self awareness please. I recognize that to found a company, you may have a certain personality type but a little self awareness and thinking about others can go a long way.
Balanced perspective, as always Kate Minogue
