Warning - talk of domestic abuse and violence. "Abuse thrives only in silence." Can we all please shine a spotlight on abuse (physical but also psychological, $exual, financial, mental and emotional)? If someone tells you they're being abused, listen. Do not say "but he's so nice, but you seem so happy, I can't believe it". The nicest of men can be the deadliest*. Do not judge women who don't leave, do not judge women who go back, this is the highest form of manipulation and fear. I speak from personal experience and from working with women who've also experienced abusive relationships. Sending love to anyone struggling with this right now, you are not alone ?? * Men can also be abused and women can also abuse. I talk about men abusing women as that is what I am experienced in - helping women in relationships with men. https://lnkd.in/df9bTFEx
TED Talks on Instagram: "??CW: Abuse ?? “I never once thought of myself as a battered wife. Instead, I was a very strong woman in love with a deeply troubled man” Why don’t domestic violence victims leave? In this deeply personal TED Talk, writer Leslie Morgan Steiner shares the story of her own relationship and sheds light on common misconceptions people have about victims of domestic abuse. Stei

DAY 7 (#6Days): According to the National Domestic Violence Hotline, here are three ways to support the survivors of #DomesticViolence: 1??Listen Without Judgment During the sharing of a survivor’s story, it is essential to create a safe environment where they feel valued and heard. Listening attentively is one of the most powerful ways to hold space. Listen to their words and emotions instead of interrupting or offering unsolicited advice. By listening without judgment, survivors can feel understood and less alone in their struggles. Here are some ways to be attentive without judgment: Reflect on what you hear to show you’re engaged Ask open-ended questions Validate the other person’s experience Be present when victims of violence or sexual assault are ready to open up 2??Validate Their Feelings As a result of domestic violence, survivors may experience shame, confusion, and fear. Using phrases like “It’s okay to feel this way” or “What you’re feeling is completely understandable” affirms survivors’ feelings. By validating their feelings, you reinforce that their experiences are real and deserving of attention and care. 3??Respect Their Boundaries Providing space means respecting survivors’ boundaries. Trauma is a complex thing, and not everyone is ready to talk about it. Let them lead the conversation and be sensitive to their needs. Respect their boundaries if they prefer silence or need time to gather their thoughts. By respecting their boundaries, you show them that you value their comfort and autonomy, fostering a sense of security. #16DaysofActivism #16Days #EndGBV #DomesticViolence #DV #OrangeTheWorld

Thank you to all those who sent me messages of support and encouragement following the recent ABC podcast and news articles relating to my work and my story. Your support is appreciated. How bystanders (like you) can help stop domestic violence PROGRAM: ALL IN THE MIND Broadcast?Sun 7 Jul 2024 at 2:00am https://lnkd.in/g6yw9pkN I am 'used to' my story. It has been my life and my version of normal for many years. I almost forget sometimes the power telling my story has on other people, and the impact of hearing first hand the realities of abuse, control and violence from someone you have a connection to. We in Australia have been stunned an appalled by the continuous stories of domestic violence related deaths this year. Every one of those stores has people connected to them, every one of those victims have people who are feeling the grief, anger, outrage and pain of those actions. We are all connected. I passionately believe in the work that I do, the program that I am involved in, and believe everyone has a role and opportunities to bring about change in many , many ways - we just need to be open to learn how. Many people are running around using buzzwords like Bystander, and coercive control, and abuse without understanding how detailed and nuanced the problem is. Many people are claiming to be experts. Please do your research. Learn a little. Listen to those who have lived it. Listen to those who have decades of research and learning behind them. Ask questions...of me or others, but be prepared to listen respectfully even if what you hear is so far outside of your own life experiences.

Domestic and intimate partner violence isn’t always visible or obvious. It can look like physical wounds like a bruise or a cut, but it can also look like silence, isolation and fear. This type of violence isn’t just physical. It can encompass a spectrum of abusive behaviours—sexual, emotional, financial or psychological—all with a single goal: to systematically control a partner or loved one. It might be a one-time incident or a repeated behavioural pattern. And the truth is, it can happen to anyone. Know the signs of domestic and intimate partner violence and stay tuned to find out what resources are available at Klinic. #DomesticViolenceAwarenessMonth

When a survivor of domestic violence and abuse approaches you for help, do you ask yourself the following questions? ?? Am I listening with patience? ?? Am I believing their experience without judgment? ?? Am I encouraging them to seek the right help instead of offering quick fixes? ?? Am I trying to rationalise the abuse happening to them? If no, pause and reflect. These actions enable abuse and can prolong a victim’s suffering. You might be their only lifeline. Think again about how will you respond. Remember, a victim’s safety is important—encourage them to seek help. We at Invisible Scars Foundation are here to support ??
