I love a good diagram. Everyone can understand this. Although the real place to do c hydropower is in big underused buildings in urban area.. we have the pumps, we can have add the tanks, and do load shifting and storage right where the power is used.

The project is the natural extension of the biggest complex along the Gilgel Gibe River with the two other hydroelectric dams, Gibe I (completed and operational since 2004)?and Gibe II (operational since 2010). The works involved a RCC dam 250 m high, with a crest length of 630 m and a total volume of 6,214,000 m3 of concrete. Snowy 2.0 is a major pumped-storage expansion of the Snowy Mountains hydropower scheme, which forms a vital part of Australia’s energy transition towards a low-emissions future. The project will substantially increase the existing scheme’s capacity, adding 2200 MW of energy generation capacity and large-scale energy storage of 350,000 MW hours. At full capacity, Snowy 2.0 could operate for almost seven days without recharge pumping, providing deep energy storage necessary to underpin increasing wind and solar generation. Not unlike the existing scheme, the Snowy 2.0 project involves substantial underground works, both in terms of scale and complexity. The key elements include 33km of TBM-driven tunnels, 10km of D&B tunnels, three shafts, and a large power station cavern complex located 750m underground. This Technical Session will provide an overview of the Snowy 2.0 project, along with an update on the delivery of key underground elements. Following this, a deeper dive will be provided into elements of the geotechnical approach to the delivery of the underground power station cavern complex. The Snowy 2.0 caverns are amongst the largest and deepest in the world and are being delivered with a highly observational approach, in which design predictions are continually reviewed against actual ground behaviour and support performance during construction. In support of this approach, the project has developed a comprehensive 3D ground model that spans not only the caverns but also the surrounding network of tunnels. HYDROPOWER V GIANT HAMSTER WHEEL v GIANT BATTERIES With apologies to Ed Miliband, I never understood his excitement for flywheel energy systems (which the press dubbed giant hamster wheels) or huge battery storage systems. So, yesterday I was pleased to listen to a presentation by Jessica Smith from SSE Renewables about the Ground Investigation programme for the Coire Glas Hydro Pumped Storage Scheme. If it gets the go ahead it will double the UK storage capacity and be our first new hydropower scheme in 40 years. The scope of the investigation was impressive, including boreholes, trial trenches, surface geophysics, seismic refraction and the construction of a hillside tunnel for exploratory works. As always, it is up to the government to decide whether this proceeds. There has been a consultation on long duration energy storage (LDES) and we now await the details of the proposed "cap and floor" investment scheme. This is a process that guarantees a certain revenue for the developer but caps it to share the benefit with the public if it performs well. Let's hope this is priced sensibly.
