In the latest issue of Kaplan's Bold Learning newsletter, just out today: As the landscape of #highereducation rapidly evolves, #collegesanduniversities must shift their focus toward skill-based curricula to better prepare #students for the future of work. In an insightful article, Lee Weiss, chief commercial officer at Kaplan North America, addresses two critical challenges: the increasing demand to demonstrate the return on educational investment (ROEI) and the transformative impact of #artificialintelligence on #education. Also: ?? Infographic Alert! While #AI continues to become a bigger part of our daily lives, many are still concerned about automation and job displacement. According to the latest Bentley-Gallup Business in Society Report, Americans' views on the risks and benefits of AI in the economy haven’t shifted much in the past year. This highlights an important challenge: Businesses and policymakers must address these concerns and focus on reskilling workers for the AI-driven future. https://lnkd.in/e6fQjNDi

In the latest issue of Kaplan's Bold Learning newsletter, just out today: Matt Flynn, vice president of learning experience, Kaplan, argues that tech #education needs right-brain thinking to help students develop the habits of mind and harness technology, like artificial intelligence, wisely. Drawing upon personal experiences, he writes that "it is important that we guide learners to the self-realization that learning can and will be at times frustrating, and develop meaningful ways to support and encourage learners during those frustrating inflection points." Also: In a U.S. job market boasting a sub-4 percent unemployment rate for more than two consecutive years, recent college graduates paradoxically are struggling, with more than half landing jobs below their qualification levels shortly after graduation. This underemployment trend, highlighted in Strada Education Foundation and The Burning Glass Institute's newly released report, shows little improvement a decade post-graduation. The infographic highlights some key data points. #highereducation #highered #collegesanduniversities #edtech #workforcedevelopment #worktrends #artificialintelligence #ai https://lnkd.in/eBmS4i8D

Should schools be skills-based organisations? ? Inspired by the theory that “technology such as AI will make traditional learning less useful,” says The Economist, schools “have adopted curriculums that focus on vaguely defined “skills” and play down the learning of facts as fuddy-duddy.” ? Corporate L&D has become used to the idea of skills-based organisations in the past few years. Skills, rather than knowledge, have become the watchword of L&D teams and the primary basis of many Talent Acquisition efforts. Work is assigned based on skills rather than job roles, expensive AI is deployed to map and develop skills, and L&D strategies are built around core skill objectives. ? L&D leaders are also largely of the view that formal education doesn’t necessarily churn out new workers with the skills that the business needs. ? Is The Economist’s scorn at a skills-based approach to education in the age of AI therefore unjustified? Can K-12 education learn a thing or two from skills-based L&D, or is there no comparison? ? #skills #reskilling #skillsbasedorganisations #education #schools

Unleashing Hidden Wisdom: Rethinking Talent in the Age of Specialization There exists a vast wellspring of wisdom, a gift from the very nature of reality itself. Traditional education systems don't readily capture this wisdom, leaving many knowledgeable individuals unseen and unheard of. # HR practices and societal norms often fail to recognise these hidden gems. Beyond #Degrees and Diplomas: Our focus on formal degrees and qualifications can overlook those who possess profound knowledge gleaned from experience, intuition, or alternative learning paths. Top universities don't hold a monopoly on wisdom. Redefining #Talent Management: We need a paradigm shift. It's time to move beyond #rigid credentials and embrace a broader definition of talent. We must create #systems that value and integrate the #wisdom of those currently #silenced. Unlocking Potential: Perhaps these #individuals possess deep ecological knowledge passed down through generations or an intuitive understanding of #complex systems. These forms of wisdom are invaluable in a world facing #intricate #challenges. A Call to Action: Let's explore new ways to identify and nurture this hidden talent. This might involve innovative HR practices,community-driven knowledge sharing, or even leveraging AI to recognise unconventional forms of expertise. The Future of Work: We can #build a more resilient and innovative society by acknowledging and integrating diverse #forms of knowledge. Let's create a future where hidden wisdom is respected, actively sought after, and #applied.

??We are switching a societal economic S curve. ??The last time this happened was at abolition of slavery in 1863 and the introduction of compulsory education starting around 1870s to 1900. ??98% of people at that time were farmers. Today 2% of the population in North America are farmers and the rest are in jobs that mostly did not exist before compulsory education. ??One of the main risks today is speed. What took decades in the past is now going to be measured in as little as 24 to 60 months. ??One of the other main risks is that no one alive today remembers this shift in the past and no ever has seen it happen as fast. ??In addition to these risks is the democratization and ability to have distributed sources of media manipulation via social media. ??This risk is profound because the majority of people do not understand the impact of repetition and logical fallacies when combined with algorithmic nudging and variable interval scheduling. ??It is a clear and present danger. ??The opportunity however is to create something profoundly better than we have now. ??????To deal with this every organization, institution and company needs a dedicated R&D function that keeps an eye on AI and exponential technologies. We can’t tips and tricks our way forward. This requires a function. This function needs to report directly to the executives and senior leadership. Directly. How can we create playbooks to identify and mitigate the risks while maximizing the opportunities? ?? The Missing Link in Education ? I recently had a thought-provoking conversation with the MBA team at MIT Sloan School of Management about my latest book on #Marketing and #AI, which is heavily based on hands-on experience. ?? The discussion centered around how this approach could provide students with a deep dive into real-world industry dynamics, equipping them with practical skills that are essential in today's fast-evolving market. However, One thing that stood out was the significant gap between what is taught in universities and what actually happens in the professional world, especially in industries like marketing and AI. ?? By focusing predominantly on theory, we are creating a gap between the knowledge students acquire in the classroom and the practical skills they need in the workplace. This not only presents challenges for students, who struggle to transition from academic environments to real-world applications, but also for employers, who are seeking talent that can immediately contribute and innovate. ?? To bridge this gap, we must recognize the importance of blending academic rigor with industry experience, ensuring that students are fully equipped to navigate and thrive in dynamic, fast-paced industries Thanks Sarah Massey for guiding me through this :)

From Written Up to Writing History: My AI in Education Journey A pivotal moment in my career came in 2021 during a conversation with Duke University professor Jon Reifschneider. Jon’s innovative work using AI to teach AI concepts through an Intelligent Assistant opened my eyes to the transformative potential of artificial intelligence in education. Energized by this vision, I eagerly shared these insights with my team and on LinkedIn. However, my enthusiasm was met with resistance - my CEO not only had me remove the posts but formally wrote me up for being "disruptive." This was particularly challenging given my decade-long dedication to the organization, where I had helped grow annual revenue from $1M to $6M through countless 12-hour days and 7-day work weeks. What initially felt like a setback turned out to be a redirect toward my true calling. Today, I'm proud to say that vision has been validated: - Featured in Forbes - Highlighted in Dan Fitzpatrick’s book on AI in education - Leading my own venture as an entrepreneur - Helping middle leaders transform traditional educational hierarchies into dynamic learning communities Two key lessons learned: 1. Trust your instincts about emerging innovations, even when others don't see the potential 2. Sometimes career setbacks are actually setting you up for something greater To all the forward-thinking educators and leaders out there: keep championing innovation. You never know which "disruptive" idea today will become tomorrow's breakthrough. #AIinEducation #EdTech #Leadership #Innovation #ProfessionalGrowth #EducationalTransformation

?? New HBS Research Alert: "Don't Expect Juniors to Teach Senior Professionals to Use Generative AI" Fascinating new working paper from Harvard Business School, MIT Sloan, Warwick Business School, and Wharton challenges conventional wisdom about how organizations should approach GenAI adoption: - Contrary to traditional tech adoption patterns, junior professionals may NOT be the best teachers for seniors when it comes to GenAI - The main barrier isn't status threat (as with previous tech) but rather genuine risks to valued business outcomes - Junior professionals often lack deep understanding of GenAI capabilities and tend to focus on quick fixes rather than systematic solutions ? Three Common Pitfalls of Junior-Led GenAI Training: 1. Limited Understanding: Juniors often misunderstand GenAI's core capabilities around accuracy, explainability, and contextualization 2. Over-Focus on Human Routines: They tend to emphasize changing human behavior instead of system design 3. Project-Level Thinking: Solutions typically stay at project level instead of addressing organization-wide or ecosystem challenges ?? What Organizations Should Do Instead: - Invest in systematic GenAI education at all levels - Focus on system design and organizational infrastructure - Develop comprehensive risk mitigation strategies - Build expertise across the organization rather than relying on bottom-up learning ?? Research based on interviews with 78 junior consultants at BCG who participated in a GenAI field experiment. Read more - attached PDF. #GenAI #FutureOfWork #OrganizationalLearning #AIAdoption #Leadership #Innovation
