Through public awareness and education on safe digging practices, we all have a hand in making Ohio the safest place to live and work. Good afternoon everyone, I volunteer for the Severn Area Rescue Association (SARA) who aim to save lives on the river Severn and surrounding areas. Today is #Worlddrowningpreventionday 25th June 2024, and we are sharing some tips for you to keep yourselves safe whether you’re visiting the coast or an inland lake this summer. In the past few months I have driven to a range of different schools delivering water safety leaflets for them to display around their schools. I went from Newent secondary down to Caldicot secondary school as far west as Osbaston primary school to Severn banks primary school in the east. In the time I had left I was able to do water safety talks for Dene Magna sixth form year 12 students and Chepstow secondary school years 7,8 and 9 students talking to them about the dangers of the rivers Severn and Wye but also that un-lifeguarded lakes are to not be seen as playgrounds. Please take the time to read our water safety tips and stay safe this summer. We are supporting #Drowning Prevention Day and here are some tips on when visiting the coast or any inland water this summer. ?? 1. Don’t forget to check the tides for where you plan to visit. https://lnkd.in/dgCwS2Fm 2. Watch this video on how to spot and avoid getting into a rip current. https://lnkd.in/dffyqZjG If you do find yourself in a rip current, swim parallel to the shore which will help to get you out of the rip, then swim to the shore. 3. If you do get into difficulty, remember. Float to live just like a star fish on your back moving your hands in circles underwater to steady yourself 4. If you spot someone in difficulty. Do the following steps: CALL - Dial 999 and ask for either the emergency services TELL - Tell them to float on their back like a star fish THROW - Throw them a life ring or throw line or anything to help them float. 5. If it’s an inland waterway such as a lake/river then call 999 and ask for the Fire Service. A big shout out to the great folks at Oyster Boys, a 501C(3) group that we work with on bay restoration. One of the founders of Oyster Boys, Dom Marino, works in the field of assisted living facilities. In this video, he highlights their efforts to engage folks with dementia and/or Alzheimer's in the construction of Vertical Oyster Gardens (VOGs) to be put out in Sarasota Bay. The bay benefits by having more of these VOGs to be used to help with our water quality issues, and the residents get to have some focused activities that give their day a bit more purpose than it might have otherwise. What we end up with is a win-win-win situation. The bay gets FREE VOGs to put out (or we can point you to a vendor who can help out with deployment), taxpayers save money because volunteers are putting these together, not paid staff, and the residents get to do something different - knowing that they are helping to sustain our bay's ongoing recovery. To be successful in recovering our bay's water quality and ecosystem health, we need to continue to look for these types of opportunities to get more people engaged in bay restoration.
