Yes, Black History Month is officially over...but we are still Black. I read a post stating this recently and it resonated. What does it mean for those who are Black and affected by the Windrush Scandal, struggling, finding it difficult or just unable to access and apply to the Windrush Schemes? By identifying this gap in provision of services, Liverpool Advocates For Windrush (L.A.W.) and Rachel Stalker from Liverpool John Moores University and LJMU Legal Advice Centre, collaborated to address this significant barrier to justice! Rachel Stalker created and invited me to run a bespoke Windrush Clinic at LJMU Legal Advice Centre. For the past month, I have tutored level 6 or 3rd year undergraduate students and conducted clinical sessions. This had been an amazing journey, with no two sessions being the same. This clinic is student-led. The students engagement has been phenomenal with a keen interest in learning more about the WindrushScandal, Windrush Schemes, how the law supports or does not, Windrush affected individuals, their human rights, recourse to justice through the courts and more.... A heart-felt???? thank you to all of our students, the LAC team including my colleague Martyn Rodmell who teaches this module with myself and most importantly, Rachel Stalker. She has enabled L.A.W. to upscale the level of our support. And we have assisted 11 persons affected by the Scandal for October, in one way or another and booked several appointments. We hear unique to harrowing experiences, some that I have not experience before, since working in this space from 2019. Professional Support Needed: If you want to support our work, give back to our communities, then please reach out to Rachel Stalker or myself. Ps. I am not affected by this tragic and grave injustice, called the Windrush Scandal. I believe that you do not have to be affected by an issue to do something about it. What happens if you are affected by one of the many horrid unimaginable scandals tomorrow? As Martin Luther King Jr. said: "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere". #JusticeForAll #OneHumanRace #ActionNotPromises #LetChangeBegin #EqualityAndEquity #RuleOfLaw #OneRuleForAll

Today, May 17, 2024 marks the 70th anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education. I was honored to be invited with my husband to the White House to commemorate this landmark decision. For those in the back that keep screaming “why is it always about race”, here’s another in the long list of reasons. Brown v. Board included several cases: Kansas, Delaware, South Carolina, Virginia and DC. The Supreme Court decision stated that “separate but equal” had no place in education. Black children were denied access to white schools, purely based on race, not location. My Mother-in-law, Ruth Ann Scales was denied access to all-white Parkdale Elementary School. Her mother, Vivian Scales, became one of the 13 plaintiffs in Brown v. Board, Topeka KS. Last year, #Virginia Lt. Governor Winsome Sears (a black woman)proudly stood up and proclaimed that Brown v Board was not about race, but “school choice”. I wonder if Lt. Governor Sears knew that Virginia was so against school integration that they passed a group of laws that shut down public schools from 1956-1959 to resist integration. It was known as the Massive Resistance. This is why teaching COMPLETE history is so important. Right now, people are banning topics of race in schools, because those topics are “divisive”. Is the topic really divisive or the truth itself? Try teaching the truth, and perhaps that will provide more understanding and context, instead of trying to pretend these things didn’t happen. #BrownVBoard #RaceInAmerica #History

Appearing on Dr. Phil McGraw show, I made a powerful call for more Black lawyers in America. Our nonprofit JustUs System, Inc. and law firm The Scruggs Law Firm represent 10 years of answering that call. Currently, only 5.5% of all lawyers are Black. Doubling this number is essential to achieving real equity. From discrimination in the workplace to barriers in education, Black communities face unique challenges. We need more representation to break down these barriers. Join us in the fight for justice. #SCruggsLaw #KansasCityLawyer #KansasCityAttorneys #PersonalInjuryExperts #InjuryJustice #AccidentAttorneyKC #KCInjuryLawyers #BlackLawyers #JustUsSystem #EquityInLaw #ScruggsLawFirm

Today we honor Juneteenth and celebrate the emancipation and freedom of Black people once enslaved. White supremacy was interwoven with the founding and history of the U.S., our capital, and DC. The nation’s capital was established on land annexed from Potomac slave plantations. Enslaved African Americans constructed the White House and the Capitol. For their forced labor, enslaved African Americans received no wages, while the government paid their enslavers. Washington, DC was also a bustling thoroughfare for the slave trade, with traffickers selling enslaved African Americans throughout the South. https://lnkd.in/dyHwN9h8 Today—160 years after the Civil War—there are resurgent forces glorifying our history of slavery. Just one month ago, in May 2024 Shenandoah County School Board voted to rename two Virginia public schools after Confederate Generals who fought to keep African Americans in bondage. In June 2024 the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights went to court on behalf of the VA NAACP and five Shenandoah high school students—to challenge the School Board’s action to take Shenandoah backward in time. We are proud to stand with those courageous VA students fighting for their right to education free of racial discrimination. Please stand with us. https://lnkd.in/dfDtK2wv #Juneteenth #racialjustice #StandWithUs #Reparations

"As with Black students, outcomes for Latinx, Native American, and Pacific Islander or Native Hawaiian students have remained lower than state averages. Because LCFF does not allow for student racial groups to generate funding or to require districts to plan targeted investments for these students, leaders have not explicitly leveraged the funding law to address these racial equity gaps."
