Today is the day! Vancouver Food Systems Dialogue at City Hall - an opportunity for the local government, community groups, and individuals with lived experiences to come together, meet, learn, and collaborate to create a fair, just, and resilient food system for all Vancouver residents. The event will be recorded and we will be sharing some key highlights. For the full event recording, please email us at [email protected]. In the meantime, learn more about Vancouver Neighbourhood Food Networks (VNFN). VNFN unite 15 networks and over 200 local partners to foster food access, skill development, and advocacy for food equity, working through the full continuum of the food security system. Rather than adopting the charity model, VNFN work towards a 'right to food' philosophy, ensuring everyone has dignified access to healthy, affordable, culturally appropriate, and sustainable food. Their unique place-based approach tailors food programs to each neighbourhood's cultures and needs, featuring community gardens, markets, workshops, and much more. This collective impact model amplifies local efforts city-wide, aiming to support and address systemic food policy issues. VNFNs are vital partners in advancing Vancouver's health, liveability, and sustainability policies. Millions of people across the U.S. live in food deserts—areas where access to affordable, nutritious food is severely limited. ?? And it’s not just an urban issue; rural communities are also impacted, with residents often traveling miles to reach the nearest grocery store. Transportation barriers and a lack of fresh food options only deepen the divide. But there are ways to shift this narrative. By supporting local urban farms, advocating for mobile markets, and pushing for better food access policies, we can start bridging the gap and creating food equity for all. #FoodDeserts #FoodEquity #CommunitySolutions #food #community #foodinsecurity

The Fitz Center for Leadership in Community, Rivers Institute, and the Urban Research Initiative are proud to partner with the Hall Hunger Initiative in supporting local food producers. Remember the pandemic and those empty grocery shelves? We can prevent that by becoming more self-reliant and growing food in our region. Buying local food strengthens our regional food system and creates a more resilient Miami Valley. America imports more food than we export. This means a drought in California, a strike in South America, or civil unrest in Europe can lead to food shortages here. By growing more food locally and supporting our farmers, we can protect against these disruptions. Eat fresh, buy local, and help create a more self-reliant community. Supporting local agriculture and buying local food is vital to building a stronger Miami Valley. These actions reduce environmental impact, foster sustainability, and create robust local economies. Together, we can cultivate a resilient, thriving community. Let’s make conscious choices for our future! Every time you buy locally, you contribute to a more resilient community. Local food systems are less vulnerable to disruptions, providing a stable food supply. Let's stand together by supporting our local producers! #ResilientCommunities #BuyLocalEatLocal #LocalFoodMovement #BuyLocal #SupportFarmers #CommunityStrength #FitzCenter

If we could all view the dysfunctions of our food systems through this lens, then we may start to make some shifts towards food security sovereignty, and injustice. Food is not only a huge part of our survival and environmental systems, but it also holds power in our political ranks and societal norms. We will not make progress in any of our current initiatives until we can agree that, food is a gift from this earth and that it needs to have its equality defended and held in its most natural form (before modification of any type) just as all people expect. Also because, food plays such a significant role, in all aspects of our entire existence, it needs to be considered in every solution we are trying to currently enact. We just have to see that food equality holds the key to every aspect of equity and justice for all.
“Hunger is a system of poverty. When we think about food systems now I think our challenge is, and I think we’ll rise to it, is to fully understand how food systems connect to affordability of housing, how it connects to our environmental sustainability, how it connects to the way we purchase goods within the county.” Great piece on our county’s new food systems rockstar Cayce Hill.

"[...] food is a right. More specifically, access to nutritious, locally-grown food, is a right. Unfortunately, not everyone has access (or enough access) to food. But our food systems don’t have to look they way they currently do. We don’t have to accept the status quo. We can rise, as a community, and demand equal access to food. We can push for the right to grow food, and support our local food producers. And change can happen, from the smallest community garden to city and county-wide initiatives. With that in mind, here are a selection of popular stories from our archive which highlight the ways cities across North America as prioritizing food equity. There are farms on top of hospitals in Boston, vacant lots that became urban gardens in Philadelphia, and a community feeding itself alongside the polar bears in northern Manitoba. There’s even a chance to learn from one of Canada’s largest cities on how it promotes local food year-round. [...]." In 2023, County Executive Steuart Pittman created the Anne Arundel County Food Council by executive order. Hosted by the Partnership for Children, Youth and Families and facilitated by Due East, the Food Council came together to address the root causes of food insecurity. Due East played a pivotal role in bringing together a diverse group of local food providers, producers, and distributors, fostering a collective vision and shared plan to ensure everyone has equitable access to affordable, healthy food. ?? This strategic plan combines safety-net programs such as food banks and pantries with long-term solutions that aim to strengthen local farming and community gardens. ???? The ultimate goal is to ensure that individuals earn enough income to afford healthy food for themselves and their families. #socialimpactleaders #sustainablecommunities #togetherwethrive

Interesting piece from Eve Livingston on a new report from Nourish Scotland making the case for public diners as a way to tackle food and health inequality ?? https://lnkd.in/e39ze8WA The report defines public diners as state-supported, affordable restaurants that serve healthy food to the public – "alongside buses, libraries, parks and museums, they are part of public infrastructure." You can read it in full here ?? https://lnkd.in/e-UHctx5 Improving health and sustainability standards in the public sector is already backed by citizens, farmers, businesses and campaign groups as an effective policy solution to get healthy, sustainable food to those who need it most, while also supporting British farmers. More on that here ?? https://lnkd.in/eEdnBJdT The new government has committed to 50% of all public sector food to be sourced locally and sustainably, a manifesto pledge welcomed by many food and farming organisations. But with public finances stretched – is the jump from public procurement to public diner a leap too far?

It’s a problem in urban and rural areas alike, but the greatest impact is in cities where it amounts to “food apartheid.” Our best chance of solving it is to get our communities engaged in creating solutions.
