During my site visit to the iForce Limited #Corby facility last week, and seeing the technology we use at this operation, it once again hammered home another reason why I joined Great Bear Distribution Ltd. Culina Group Limited. There is many companies that jump on the #sustainability bandwagon, but the question is, which ones are #greenwashing and which ones are truly trying to make a difference. The machine below is an automated right size packaging machine (guess there is a more tech description than that), but ultimately it builds a box around the exact dimensions of items / an order, the impact of this is a 25% reduction in packaging waste and also an improvement on load fill with the reduction of shipping large empty cardboard boxes. According to the National Wooden Pallet & Container Association (NWPCA), the industry produces near zero waste and recovers, repairs, and recycles pallets at the highest rate compared to other packaging materials. Ever wondered about the hardworking teams that collect your bins every week, regardless of the weather? Recently, I had the pleasure of spending a day with a fantastic Huntingdonshire District Council crew - Ian, Kane, and Michael. They showed me the ropes and gave me a glimpse into the daily challenges, including ?? the number of miles the teams walk every day - I did 6.5 miles and I didn't get out of the cab as often as the Kane and Michael ?? the poor parking on our roads that is a real hindrance to get the truck down narrow roads ?? expert driving - H&S means the vehicles have to be reversed all the way down cul-de-sacs - and from someone who doesn't even like to reverse park, Ian's expert driving was very impressive ?? the number of bins we had to reject due to contamination - recycling collection round - I know our waste minimisation team work really hard to highlight what can and can't go in bins but still work to do ?? it made me think of design layout of housing estates - the practicalities of where bins will go and how they will be collected ?? sadly not everyone treats our refuse teams with respect - examples of where people are aggressive and rude make their jobs tougher I was hugely impressed by the teams #dedication, #professionalism and #commitment . It's easy to take these unsung heroes for granted, but their work is critical to our wellbeing and the environment. So next time you see your refuse team, take a moment to thank them for their hard work and service. They are the backbone of our waste management system, and we owe them our appreciation ??????
