In less than 24 hours after posting two PhD positions in my group, I received more than 150 applications with candidates sharing their CVs, educational records, recommendation letters, etc. All these applications arrived via email (an unofficial route), and none were submitted through the official platform. While I appreciate the effort everyone put into their applications, I decided not to read these emails or review their contents. My reasoning is straightforward: the job postings included detailed instructions on how to apply, and I believe that a serious candidate should follow those instructions. If a candidate isn’t willing to spend a few minutes reading the job ad, it raises questions about their attention to detail. I want to ensure that my future team members are proactive and self-sufficient, which is why following the application instructions is so important. I encourage future candidates to carefully read job postings to ensure they meet all requirements. It is your right to inquire about the position but one should not apply through the unofficial channels. #job_application #phdposition, #academicjobs
I think your behavior is unprofessional and you can't ignore the efforts of 150 applicants. Instead of this showoff post (personal impression), you can easily answer back to the received emails automatically by a template text indicating the application process, requirements, and related links. By the way, I have visited the job ad. There is an informal enquiry section in the literature that indicates the applicants can send you an email... Anyway, Instead of this negative response in social media, give some hope to the students and at least be kind in this tough situations. Good luck
in the last section of job discription you mentioned : "Informal enquiries are encouraged and should be directed to?Prof Kamal Asadi" , so I as a candidate put effort and wrote Cover and in my email asked for your advice to empower my chance of acceptance, then follow the formal process with having in mind your advice, that's exactly "Informal enquiries" that you " encouraged"
At first place why you provide email and posting on your wall about vacancies if you don’t want to read.
A large component of any good outcome is pure luck. People don't like to acknowledge this fact as it is a humbling one. May be these 150 odd candidates dodged a bullet and are better off elsewhere. You on the other hand are having a moment that is not your best. Doing what you did is just bad judgement. Posting it here is the real cherry on top. May be you are the most senior individual handling these applications and your decision is final. If not, seek counsel on how to advise these candidates about their applications. Don't put easy apply or emails on your ads if you don't intend for people to apply. Someone who is looking for a job is fighting battles you might have no idea about and mental clarity is state they cant find themselves in. As for the ad, the email for enquiries can be put on the application website of your university. Fix your side of things and you will see these issues resolving. Academia has high stress, low salary and immense competition. All we have is each other. You are very fortunate to have a position at a university. Use it to help others and don't pull the ladder like this for menial reasons. Judge people on their research and teaching and not where they applied because you had an email in your ad.
I think candidates often send their CVs directly to the PI, along with applying through the official portal, intending to reinforce their application and establish a preliminary connection before the interview process.

4 个月Kamal Asadi - what if the procedure you mentioned in the ad/post was very cumbersome & difficult to follow? Have you given a thought to that? Sometimes talented people don't like following laborious process! Hoping you don't miss out on such candidate. I agree with you on whatever you have mentioned in the post, just giving a fair other side perspective.
