The?ASE Education Foundation?and?Goodguys Rod & Custom Association are continuing their partnership and will conduct educational awareness seminars at select Goodguys events throughout the 2024 season. “Together with Goodguys, we are able to interact with students who have the interest and technical aptitude to excel in one of the many career paths in the automotive industry, and these interactions help strengthen students’ chances of entering our industry,” said?Michael Coley, president, ASE Education Foundation. “Our pilot program with Goodguys was a huge success. We brought 450 students from ASE-accredited automotive programs to three Goodguys events across the country. “These events showed students how they can have a successful career as a technician and opened their eyes to other industry career paths. Many students have only been exposed to the technician role in the service and repair industry. So, sharing a broader view of possible career opportunities and how their automotive coursework applies, opens their eyes to a future of possibilities. Those possibilities are the key to getting and keeping automotive students in our industry.” ASE accredited schools are invited to the hands-on career exploration events, which take place Fridays prior to select Goodguys events. Students start the day meeting with a panel of experts and industry professionals. They are then paired with an industry mentor who tours the Goodguys show with them so they can learn what types of careers participating companies have to offer. At the end of the day, students and mentors are given tickets to that weekend’s Goodguys event. Students are given an extra ticket to bring a friend, further extending the career day opportunities to more students. “Business owners have the opportunity to do a small-scale version of the ASE/Goodguys events,” said Coley. “We encourage businesses to reach out to their local automotive, collision or truck programs and invite students into their places of business to show them the different careers available to them. Business owners can contact their ASE field manager for an introduction to a local ASE-accredited program.” ASE - National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence #aftermarket #autocare #carcare

Today at MACH24, a group of students had the incredible opportunity to hear from our Managing Director, Martin Mulvey, about the importance of choosing a career in engineering/toolmaking. As he addressed the students, he emphasized the critical role that engineers and toolmakers play in shaping the future of the UK. Martin began his talk by highlighting the rapid advancements in technology and innovation that are driving the engineering industry forward. He pointed out how engineers are at the forefront of these developments, creating new solutions to complex problems and pushing the boundaries of what is possible. He stressed that choosing a career in engineering offers endless opportunities for growth, creativity, and impact. However, Martin also brought attention to a concerning trend in the UK – the decline of toolmakers. He explained to the students how toolmakers are essential craftsmen who build and develop the tools for manufacturing. Without skilled toolmakers, the manufacturing industry would struggle to thrive. He emphasized that the UK is increasingly facing a shortage of qualified toolmakers, and it is vital for the younger generation to step up and fill this gap. Martin shared with the students the importance of preserving the tradition of toolmaking and ensuring that the UK remains a hub of engineering excellence. He encouraged the students to consider a career in toolmaking, highlighting the unique combination of technical skills, creativity, and problem-solving that this profession requires. Mulvey emphasized that becoming a toolmaker is not just a job, but a noble calling that contributes to the backbone of the country's industrial strength. In conclusion, Martin Mulvey's talk at MACH24 was a powerful reminder of the importance of choosing a career in engineering. He urged the students to consider the impact they could have on the world by pursuing a profession that requires courage, creativity, and commitment. His message resonated with the students, leaving them inspired and motivated to explore the possibilities that await them in the exciting world of engineering. #backingbritain #uktoolmakers #ukmanufacturing #students #apprenticeships #engineering

Student Spotlight! Tyler Pielle was one of the first participants of the EV Technology & Service Micro-Credential at Camosun College. Inspired by his late father’s passion for tinkering with vehicles, and fascinated with building and taking things apart, Tyler decided to take an automotive foundations course. This eventually led to him finishing Levels 2-4 for his apprenticeship training at Camosun. Around this time, the number of electric vehicles on the road began to increase. As a response, Camosun developed the EV Technology & Service Micro-Credential with the assistance of Instructor Pat Jones, to help automotive professionals close the knowledge gap. Tyler said, “When I heard Pat was teaching an EV course after I completed my Red Seal, and he asked me if wanted to take part, it was an automatic yes.” The Micro-Credential proved invaluable. “Learning base theory and safety about EVs is critical, which instructor Pat Jones does a great job instilling in his students. It can always be expanded on in the field, but if fundamentals are unknown, it will not help in troubleshooting scenarios.” Tyler added, “Granted, the course offers a far deeper knowledge and learning as well.” With the rise of electric vehicles (EVs), Tyler sees big opportunities for independent automotive service shops. “Most of the EV service is taking place in dealerships, for now. However, it opens a major door for all smaller independent repair facilities to create a new avenue for their services they can provide. I would love to see more independent facilities taking on EV work.” For anyone in the field, Camosun’s EV Technology & Service course comes highly recommended by Tyler. “Pat Jones is a very well studied and excellent instructor,” he commented. “I gained a ton of knowledge from [the course]. He is constantly improving to only help us in the field further, which is amazing.” Currently, Tyler handles a range of automotive repairs at his shop, from diagnostics to major engine work. What is he looking forward to? “Getting more EV work in for myself in the near future so I can nerd out a bit, and maybe share it with Pat!” We’re excited to see where Tyler’s journey takes him next! If you’re inspired by his story, check out the EV Technology & Service Micro-Credential offered by Camosun through ProSIT.
