The world today faces a multitude of challenges – violent conflicts disrupt education and stability, a polarized online environment fosters negativity, and persistent economic inequality limits opportunities. These issues threaten not only individual futures but also the overall stability of societies. It is crucial to equip youth with the skills needed to foster a culture of peace, nurture responsible global citizens, and promote sustainable development, in order to build a more just, inclusive, and sustainable future for all. In the spirit of cultivating a more inclusive space, we’re unpacking May East’s “Leverage Point 2 – Developing spaces for gathering and belonging” – where summer youth interns of Eye on Ivy relook at their everyday public spaces with lens of curiosity. Seeing what that place means to them, what makes that place unique, is the place living up to its full potential? It's been a minute since I've given any career/professional updates. I am glad to annouce that this summer, I have the sweet opportunity to be a Belonging (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, & Accessibility) Intern at Krispy Kreme. I will be working directly under Christopher Bylone van Sandwyk at the Charlotte, North Carolina location. I am looking forward to assisting in creating and fostering a culture of belonging & inclusivity for a well-known company. Also, in the Fall, I have the opportunity to be attending THE North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. I will be in their Post-Baccaulatre Studies program with the intention and determination of joining the English and African Amercian Literature Masters Program. What is PBS you may ask? PBS stands for Post-Baccaulate Studies; which basically means due to my performance during my undergradute years, I will need to take a certain amount of graduate-level courses before I can officially enter my desired Masters program. Once I take a specfic amount of courses, I will be able to officially declare my desired Master's program: English and African American Literature. Most people wouldn't share this because it isn't the traditional route that many students take; however, I am coming to accept that God never intended for me to be tradiontional. Don't be afraid to walk paths that seem empty and that no one have walked before. Having courage and walking those paths make you a trailblazer. Don't stop pushing. #newintern #krispykreme #pbsstudies #ncat #keeppushing

For the Spring 2024 semester, CPF POSC 395 Policy Research Internship students explored how eminent domain affected communities in south Los Angeles, especially Black communities within California’s 37th Congressional district. Students examined its impacts on land ownership, generational wealth, and community prosperity. They presented their extensive research and recommendations to our partner, Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove. Sofia Connors, a sophomore majoring in Political Science, said, "I was grateful to take part in the POSC 395 Policy Research Internship. I learned about the ways the government has historically used eminent domain to target minority communities in Los Angeles, segregating them and gentrifying their communities. This internship taught me about the foundations Los Angeles was built upon, that many fail to acknowledge. It is rewarding to know we could be making an impact on policy, potentially getting reparations for the countless Black families displaced by eminent domain and had their homes taken." A huge shout out to Sofia Connors, Sydney Crowley, Christian Haro, Juan Herdoiza, and Bright Lee for your outstanding work on this project! For the Fall 2024 semester, CPF POSC 395 Policy Research Internship students explored how new development and the short term rental market impacts the displacement of residents. They researched solutions to address both the affordable housing supply and homelessness issues in Los Angeles. They presented their extensive research and recommendations to our partner, the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office. "This experience and the support from the organizational partners empowered me to apply my academic knowledge to real-world challenges. Taking 395 was more than a resume booster, it was an opportunity to bridge the gap between theory and practice, deepening my understanding of how policy decisions impact vulnerable communities. It allowed me to contribute meaningfully to efforts aimed at addressing housing inequities while honing my analytical and problem-solving skills in a professional setting. The class structure, alongside the substantial opportunities to civically engage with CPF, made my POSC 395 experience incredibly worthwhile," said Leah Nwizugbo, a junior majoring in Political Science. A huge shout out to Marcellas Belay, Anthony Hoang, Maria Lopez, and Leah Nwizugbo for your outstanding work on this project! The City's CLASS Ceiling... This post could rattle a few cages, but you do have to break a few eggs to make an omelette. This is an abridged version of the dissertation written by one of our first ever cohort (Class of 2023, who came on in 2018) of the Young Women Into Finance program, Lily Coleman. She looked into the issue of diversity in the City through the lens of nepotism. Obviously we hear a lot (quite rightly!) about stamping out racism and sexism and several other isms...but we don't hear much about stamping out nepotism. I am posting this because in my experience of building YWIF over the last six years, I have come to see that nepotism in the City of London absolutely lives and breathes. In some institutions, almost all of the interns are the sons and daughters of clients and/or friends of the senior personnel of that institution. Many young people have great academics and come across brilliantly well on paper. But the moment that is really instrumental for these people is the moment where they secure an internship. I have personally seen what that does for the confidence of a young woman from a socioeconomically disadvantaged background - how her eyes light up when she realizes that the people at Igneo or Cantor Fitzgerald or DC Advisory or IFM or CIBC or DigitalBridge are JUST LIKE HER. That she CAN achieve what they are achieving. Because before that, people from the "wrong side of the tracks" don't have that confidence. So by giving our young women an internship, you are genuinely changing their life's trajectory in a way you cannot even imagine. Trust me - you may see it as "just an internship" but just a few weeks doing some basic stuff with you and your team in your office can genuinely change the course of a very bright young woman's life. Anyway, please take 10 minutes to read Lily's thought-provoking piece here, and let me know your thoughts below.

Rarely have I had more fun than in the last 10 weeks with this year's New Jersey State Policy Lab Summer Internship 2024 cohort. What a joy it has been to work with every single person involved in this program. These young scholars knocked it out of the park with their final presentations and I can't wait for you all to see their work on the New Jersey State Policy Lab website! Stay tuned for access to their full presentations on (in alphabetical order by last name): Ways to improve maternal health outcomes for Black birthing people, Ways to integrate more moderate exercise in K-12 schools, How to foster social connections between college students and adults 65 and older, How states might address the role of AI in K-12 classrooms, How U.S. immigration policy has and has not changed over the past handful of presidential administrations, The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on education for youth with learning disabilities in New Jersey, How New Jersey might approach increasing Medicaid enrollment for Hispanic adults, and Why Black adults in two Essex County, NJ municipalities have differences in chronic health conditions.
That's a wrap! ?? Yesterday, our interns presented their final #policy research projects, marking the end to a truly rewarding summer. We are so proud of the work Bernice Amankwah, Luc Chapeau, Justin Deonarine, Beauty Okunbor, Gretel R., Jordyn Roy, Joana Tineo, and Tanaya Watson have accomplished these last ten weeks, and we can't wait to see what else is in store for you all as you continue on in your respective careers in and around public policy. Special thanks to our teaching assistants, Sophia Fox-Dichter and Ciera Gaither, as well as Executive Director Elizabeth Cooner, Ed.D. for leading our third annual summer #internship.
