The Office of Grants and Research has awarded $310,000 in federal grants through the Residential Substance Use Treatment for State Prisoners Program. These funds will allow 10 Massachusetts Sheriff’s Offices to provide jail-based and residential treatment. Legislation that would move our 18-year-olds from the adult justice system to the juvenile system in Massachusetts passed in the Senate and is now being considered by the conference committee of the Economic Development bill.?In this final push, hear from the teams at More Than Words and UTEC about why Raise the Age matters to them! Why Raise the Age? Youth don't belong in adult jail - not according to brain science, not according to the data. The juvenile system is more developmentally appropriate, includes access to services and education, and doesn't hamper a young person with an adult criminal record. It is more effective for the commonwealth and it is the right thing to do for our youth. Take action! Did you know? OAR partners with Arlington County and the City of Falls Church Courts to provide Alternative Sentencing and Diversion programs. Through community service, individuals can fulfill their obligations to the justice system by giving back to the community instead of serving jail time or paying fines. Additionally, our Diversion program, in collaboration with the Vera Institute and Office of the Commonwealth's Attorney, aims to reduce recidivism and address racial disparities in sentencing.
