At the risk of sounding like a broken record, these five points are worth repeating, and not just in the context of education technology or digital literacy: 1. there's no one way to teach, or teach any content, or teach any students, or teach with any technology 2. digital literacy skills like all skills and competencies must be explicitly taught to be learned 3. teacher self-efficacy and confidence are important for effective teaching 4. teachers need time to learn to use new technology but more importantly to learn how to use it in the service of teaching and learning 5. to learn well teachers need some external input, an evidence base, and time to learn from each other within and across schools and in teams #explicitteaching #digitalliteracy

We are well into the second decade of the 21st century. Technology competency or use in teaching and learning is no longer an option for educators. It's a requirement in our teacher standards and curriculum priorities. All teachers need to be modelling the skilled use of technology to their students and building their digital literacy. Research shows that teacher perspectives and confidence in using educational technology significantly impact student outcomes. Even if two classrooms have the same content objectives, technology pedagogy choices can greatly affect student experience and outcomes. This emphasises the importance of professional learning and leadership in this space. Collaborative and applied practice-based professional learning is particularly effective in improving knowledge and attitudes towards edtech and its importance in developing the digital literacy of students.
