Last week, four University of Tennessee College of Law students participated in Alternative Winter Break in Nashville, Tennessee. They assisted us with research on appellate mediations and learned how we partner with other state agencies to help older and vulnerable adults. Way to go! Last night, I had the privilege of attending the Mayflower Lecture, delivered by The Right Honourable Baroness Carr of Walton-on-the-Hill, the Lady Chief Justice of England and Wales. Hosted by the Plymouth Law Society PLS, University of Plymouth and Plymouth City Council the event was an inspiring and thought-provoking discussion on the challenges of securing and enforcing judgments within our legal system. Baroness Carr emphasised a critical issue: a judgment alone is insufficient without an effective and accessible enforcement process. The lecture explored how enforcement systems can minimise costs while ensuring access to justice for all. Key topics included: ? The need to balance fair trial rights with reducing enforcement costs. ? Exploring alternative models: administrative, judicial officer-based, or court-centered systems. ? Considering whether enforcement should remain court-based or evolve into a unified county court model for greater accessibility. As a law student, I found the lecture incredibly insightful, shedding light on how the legal system can adapt to better serve individuals seeking justice. It was an invaluable opportunity to learn from the experiences of leading members of the judiciary and the legal profession.

Huge result in our class action against OSPI with a published opinion that - Ninth Circuit reversed and remanded on our denied prelimianry injunction to stop school districts from exiting student before they turn 22: As one court has observed, “[i]t is almost beyond dispute that wrongful discontinuation of a special education program to which a student is entitled subjects that student to actual irreparable harm. But the promise of compensatory education is no answer to the claim of irreparable harm arising from the denial of special education. We conclude that the students meet all four of the Winter requirements, so we vacate the district court’s order and remand for further proceedings including the entry of a preliminary injunction. We do not consider whether the proposed class warrants certification under Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 23. Because the district court has not previously addressed that issue, we leave it to be resolved on remand. VACATED and REMANDED.?
Cedar Law PLLC (myself, Lara Hruska and Kaitlin Leifur-Masterson) and Susman Godfrey LLP (Ian Crosby) won a major victory in the Ninth Circuit - ordering the district court to enter a preliminary injunction against #Washington's Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction for their unlawful practice of excluding 21-year-olds from #specialeducation.
