Camden is a vibrant, multicultural borough, with 45.4% of Camden residents born outside the UK, contributing to its rich diversity, albeit with significant socio-economic challenges: - At 41%, Camden has the second-highest poverty rate in London.? - Camden faces the worst housing affordability in the capital.?? - London’s Black and Asian communities have been disproportionately affected by the cost-of-living crisis.? - Over 2 in 5 Bangladeshis and nearly 1 in 3 Black Londoners live in overcrowded housing conditions in Camden, which is considerably higher than the UK average.? - There has been a 39% rise in hate crimes all over London in 2023 compared to 2022. Our incredible community researchers are examining the impact of structural racism on housing, education, employment, and safety across the borough.? Findings from our research will inform policy recommendations aimed at key development areas, such as enhancing community infrastructure, improving educational quality with better cultural training and diverse curriculum design, and fostering pathways to employment through collaboration with local businesses. Andy York, our Human Rights Manager, and Dominique Conteh, CIPP/E., Head of Ethics and Compliance, represented Pilgrim's Europe at the Bright Future Co-op Parliamentary Roundtable yesterday, hosted with the Co-operative Party. The important event brought together MPs, businesses and charities to discuss what more can be done?to create opportunities for those affected. ? Through our work with Bright Future Co-operative, we’re supporting victims of modern slavery from the UK to have permanent, safe employment. We’ve provided 16 placements across our manufacturing sites since 2019, offering safe and secure work, as well help with accommodation and skills training. ? The event brought together businesses, charities, and government to discuss what more we can do to help survivors of modern slavery live in dignity and with freedom—especially timely as it marked the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery on December 2nd. A very big thank you to Kate Dearden MP, Gareth Snell MP, and Camilla Monckton for attending and contributing to this discussion. It was also great to meet various partners, including The Midcounties Co-operative, Co-op , Speedy Hire , Currys plc , Causeway Charity and JERICHO.
