Great summary of the latest ProWein Business survey from Meininger's International with loads of useful insights to unpack. Probably the biggest takeaway is the following: "there is a clear shift in consumer preferences towards more refreshing products, including white wines, sparkling wines, and low-alcohol wines". Also of note is the boost global boost in interest for Bag in Box wines. In short (and as I have been saying for years now), contemporary, western consumers under the age of 50 want to enjoy easy-drinking, financially approachable wines and will reward producers who satisfy those demands. https://lnkd.in/eW2eiMmr

When discussing wine, the terms "aftertaste" and "finish" both describe the lingering flavor in your mouth post-sip. They are essentially interchangeable, representing qualities like crisp, smoky, spicy, and smooth. Premium wines boast longer finishes compared to lower-tier options. Over time, white wines tend to deepen in color, while red wines may take on a brownish hue as they age. Most wine professionals have an impressive file of tasting notes on hand to talk about any bottle of wine. But contrary to popular belief the most powerful framework for talking about how a wine drinks isn't to focus on the flavours and aromas that make the wine special. The most powerful framework is to focus on what makes a wine similar to other wines. For example, does the wine have enough in common with a Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon to put it in the same category? If it does, you've just found an incredibly accessible and effective way to communicate to your guest or client what this wine tastes like. No need to go down the rabbit hole of unctuous blackcurrant and roasted green peppercorn. You don't differentiate a wine with elaborate tasting notes. You differentiate a wine by telling a story about the landscape it came from and the people who broke their backs to make it.?

GERMANY 2024 TASTING REPORT: The Pursuit of Perfection (Part VI) Finally, it’s worth noting the seemingly sudden explosion in the number of exciting sekts, or German sparkling wines. The sekt revolution could have happened a lot earlier if it weren’t for the fact that very cheap sparkling wines, largely made from imported Italian and Spanish base wines, formerly dominated the German market. It’s no wonder that German consumers who wanted a quality sparkling wine preferred Champagne before sekts made their splash on the scene. I think that the?Winter Sekt Rheinhessen Pure Brut Nature 10/18?says a great deal about what changed. Although this is a Champagne-method sparkling wine, it’s a cuvee entirely composed of reserve wines from the vintages 2008 to 2015. Germany’s first perfect sparkling wine is incredibly complex with a super mineral acidity and a kaleidoscopic finish. It’s impossible to imagine a more radical break with the thin, tart sparkling wines of the past that were propped up with sweetness but still had an aggressive mousse.
