The programs of Women's Earth and Climate Action Network (WECAN) International are consistently some of the most rooted, galvanizing, and actionable of any climate-centered programs I attend. It's no wonder: Indigenous women - and feminists across the gender spectrum - are leaders in climate solutions, and furthering policies and practices of care and climate justice. When we talk about a just transition, there is so much we need to get right. We cannot repeat the colonial and extractive practices of the past when it comes to the resources needed to adapt. About 50% of energy transition minerals and metal projects are located on or near Indigenous territories. The rights of Indigenous Peoples must be protected and respected. As part of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII), WECAN held an event called “Indigenous Women Upholding Indigenous Rights and Leading Climate Solutions.” Panelists discussed “the impacts of fossil fuels, deforestation, and the climate crisis in their communities and how they are implementing climate solutions, practicing traditional knowledge systems, upholding Indigenous rights, promoting the right to self-determination, and advancing policies and practices of care and climate justice.” You can watch the recording here: https://lnkd.in/e9AH55hb and it features: - Dr. Crystal A Cavalier, Ed.D, MPA (Occaneechi Band of the Saponi Nation), Co-Founder, 7 Directions of Service, Turtle Island, USA - Taily Terena (Terena Nation), Indigenous rights activist, Environmental Health Program Consultant for the International Indian Treaty Council, WECAN Coordinator, Brazil - Casey Camp Horinek (Ponca Nation), Ponca Nation Environmental Ambassador and WECAN Board Member, Turtle Island, USA - Olivia Bisa Tirko (Chapra Nation), President of the Autonomous Territorial Government of the Chapra Nation - President Whitney Gravelle (Bay Mills Indian Community), President and Executive Council Bay Mills Indian Community, Turtle Island/USA - Majo Andrade Cerda (Kichwa), from the Kichwa People of Serena, Leader of Economy and community development of CONFENIAE (Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of the Ecuadorian Amazon) - Shirley Krenak Krenak, Founder of the Shirley Djukurna Krenak Institute, Co-founder of ANMIGA, Brazil - Luzbeidy Monterrosa (Wayuu), Filmmaker and Founder of Shinyak Kashikai, Colombia - With moderation by Osprey Orielle Lake, Founder and Executive Director of Women’s Earth and Climate Action Network (WECAN), USA #UNPFII #indigenousrights #selfdetermination #climatesolutions #climatejustice #wecaninternational

Today at #COP16, our Women’s Land Rights Initiative (WLRI) took center stage in Cali, Colombia, signaling a pivotal moment to elevate women’s rights. Despite women being essential stewards of land and natural resources, they are too often overlooked in environmental frameworks. Through the WLRI, we are committed to reshaping this narrative by ensuring women’s rights are rooted in global environmental processes. Our approach is holistic: uniting a full political spectrum of partners, from grassroots movements, national focal points, international networks and policy stakeholders to align national strategies, implement gender-responsive indicators, and mobilize resources for women’s land rights. Let us sustain this momentum as the next COPs still unfold in 2024, strengthening the framework for women’s rights and land justice across #biodiversity, #climate, and #desertification agendas. Five years ago, we held an event at Climate Week in San Francisco to elevate the voices of women leading conservation efforts in their territories. Only five of us showed up. But today, at #COP16, things are different! The momentum is growing, and we are no longer alone in our fight for gender justice in climate and environmental governance ??. This week in Cali, we came together with incredible women to discuss territorial governance in the Amazon. The room was full of people ??!! Their stories, their strength, and their resilience were nothing short of inspiring: ??"We guarantee the integrity of our territories, preserving our native languages for future generations." - Diana Paola Lozano Moreno, OPIAC ??"The world must know we will never give up on defending our territory and biodiversity. Without it, there is no life." - Zenaida Yasacama, CONAIE - Mujeres CONAIE ??"The responsibility to protect nature belongs to all of humanity, not just Indigenous Peoples." - Angela Kaxuyana, COIAB - Joint Coordination of Indigenous Organizations of the Brazilian Amazon ? COIAB The urgency of supporting women like Diana, Zenaida, and Angela is echoed in the latest report from Rights and Resources Initiative. The data shows that less than 1% of global funding for climate change and adaptation reaches Indigenous, Afro-descendant, and local community women’s organizations. Without direct, timely financial commitments, we cannot create the transformative change needed. Women in the Global South, particularly those on the frontlines of environmental conservation, remain severely underfunded. The gaps in funding, especially for Indigenous women, are stark. Only 1.4% of the $28.5 billion in grants between 2016-2020 went to Indigenous women’s organizations. This must change! NOW! Together, we are weaving a stronger organizational fabric to support women in their fight for land and territorial rights. The road ahead is long, but we are not walking it alone. Let’s advocate for better funding strategies that reach women at the heart of biodiversity conservation ???? #GenderJustice #IndigenousRights #Biodiversity #ClimateAction #WomenInLeadership #FundingEquity The Invisible Thread = TINTA = The International Land and Forest Tenure Facility FIMI - International Indigenous Women's Forum Global Alliance of Territorial Communities

#openaddress to United Nations UN Women Link for further reading: https://lnkd.in/dS_BbN2M "Have you ever wondered how freedom of land ownership by #African women is linked to the fight against #climatechange? Beyond the statistics, this connection runs deep, shaping both #environmental resilience and #socialequity. When women have secure land rights, they become stewards of the land, implementing #sustainable practices that mitigate the impacts of #climatechange. Additionally, land ownership empowers women economically, enabling them to invest in resilience-building measures for their communities. However, these efforts are often hindered by the disproportionate #carbonfootprint of Europe, the largest producer of #greenhousegas emissions globally. Holding Europe accountable for its environmental impact is not just a matter of #policy; it's a crucial step towards addressing the systemic inequalities that perpetuate climate vulnerability, particularly among marginalized communities like African women. By acknowledging and addressing this linkage, we can forge a path towards a more sustainable and equitable future for all. Read more about this intersection in our latest blog post: https://lnkd.in/dS_BbN2M #ClimateChange #GenderEquality #EnvironmentalJustice #EuropeCarbonFootprint #LandRights #Sustainability #sdgs

What happens when women take back their land? The Indigenous women of the Lenca community of AMIR in Honduras are leading a powerful movement toward climate resilience and gender-justice. ?? Through agroecology and land reclamation, these women are restoring ecosystems, securing food sovereignty, and fighting against the exploitation of their land. Their work shows how gender-just climate solutions can address both climate change and social inequality. Want to see more of these powerful solutions in action? This article highlights the importance of fair #funding and #investment, for a better and safer #future. “Less than 1% of philanthropic funding targets #gender and the environment, despite the critical role women play in mitigating #climatechange and defending biodiversity.“ SHE Changes Climate
“Gender-just climate action isn’t solely about rectifying injustices done to women. It is also an essential means to harness the innovation, skills, and abilities of half the population to create solutions that benefit all of humanity.” Less than 1% of philanthropic funding targets #gender and the environment, despite the critical role women play in mitigating #climatechange and defending biodiversity. Gender-just #ClimateFinance is urgently needed to support these efforts, write Co-Impact's Board Member Laura Garcia (Global Greengrants Fund), Bridget K. Burns (Women's Environment & Development Organization), Carla López (Fondo FCAM), and Nisha Owen (Global Greengrants Fund UK) in this timely article for Alliance magazine.
