EV owners are finally starting to smile more at the charger—but there’s still room for improvement. J.D. Power’s latest study reveals that #electricvehicle owner satisfaction with public #evcharging improved for two straight quarters in the first half of 2024. One standout is the praise for streamlined payment systems like Plug & Charge, which operate much like Tesla’s automatic payment function. These systems scored significantly higher for ease of payment and charging, shaving precious minutes off charging sessions compared to using mobile apps or credit cards. However, the study also highlighted ongoing challenges. Inoperable chargers continue to frustrate users, with 19% of respondents reporting they couldn't charge due to out-of-service equipment. The lack of available chargers or long wait times remains a problem, especially in regions like the Middle Atlantic and Pacific. Despite these issues, the overall satisfaction is trending up, signaling progress as public-charging infrastructure continues to expand. Future studies will likely track further improvements, driven by the recognition of these opportunities for growth. Advancements in Wireless Charging Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) researchers have achieved a breakthrough in wireless electric vehicle (EV) charging, demonstrating a 100 kW system with 96% efficiency.
