In February 2024, the #NYSDOH updated its 2006 "Guidance for Evaluating Soil Vapor Intrusion in the State of New York" without providing advanced notice or an accompanying fact sheet. The update assigned 13 volatile petroleum compounds to three new Soil Vapor/Indoor Air Decision Matrices. Prior to this update, only chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons were subject to the agency's Soil Vapor Intrusion Guidance. John D. Rockefeller co-founded the Standard Oil Company, which became a giant in the oil industry. His Standard Oil became infamous for its ruthless business tactics, which included horizontal integration (buying out competitors) and vertical integration (controlling all aspects of the oil production process from extraction to transportation). Today we opened a 30-day public comment period for input on revisions to Directive 060: Upstream Petroleum Industry Flaring, Incinerating, and Venting. These proposed changes are part of the Government of Alberta’s Red Tape Reduction initiatives to reduce duplication and costs and improve efficiency of regulatory processes while maintaining high standards for industry oversight on environmental and public protection. ?? A draft of the revised D060 is out for comment! Whilst successive UK governments seem laser-focused (sic) on ruining the remaining UK oil and gas production in the North Sea and West of Britain. The UK still have huge demand for oil and gas - and this will mean importing. All imported oil has higher carbon emissions due to the transportation overhead. We argue it's far better to produce indigenous oil and gas, particularly where there is existing infrastructure in place - rather than washing our hands and simply moving the burden of responsibility for carbon emissions overseas. The Majnoon field in Iraq is capable of producing more oil than the entire UKCS. Majnoon is operated by the Basra Oil Company (BOC), the Iraq state-owned company. We are not suggesting that BOC are responsible for anomalous carbon emissions nor that they don't adhere to "good oilfield practices". However, we could name fields and operators in the local region where we do have grave concerns about the levels of carbon emissions and the environmental impact of their operations. The BBC documentary "Under Poisonous Skies" is worth watching to see the serious pollution which goes on in fields in the region.
