From 2020 to 2023, the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) District 3 oversaw the widening of State Highway 55 between Smiths Ferry and Round Valley, Idaho, approximately 60 miles (97 km) north of the city of Boise. This route provides a critical transportation connection between Boise and the town of McCall and is one of the few north–south connector routes in Idaho. At the project location, the highway follows a deep incised canyon formed by the North Fork of the Payette River. ITD’s project goal was to improve roadway geometry and sight distance by widening and realigning the roadway using a series of rock cuts and downslope wall systems. Within the 1-mile (1.6 km) project limits, work included nine major rock cuts ranging between 60 and 200 feet high (18–61 m). On March 15, 2021, a series of significant failures occurred in the newly constructed rock slopes, damaging several pieces of heavy equipment and shutting down the road. Consultation on potential circumstances where digging may continue beyond the locate validity period without having to request a new locate. Ministry of Public and Business Service Delivery would like your input on the development of a potential regulation that would prescribe circumstances where digging may continue after the expiration of the locate validity period. As specified in the Ontario Underground Infrastructure Notification System Act, 2012 (One Call Act), once a locate has passed its validity period a new locate must be obtained in order to continue to dig. MPBSD is proposing to address stakeholder requests for more efficiencies in the locate delivery system to support the timely completion of construction projects, while maintaining public safety. The RNGD Infrastructure team partnered with W.G. Yates Construction on Boyd Gaming’s Treasure Chest Casino project in Kenner, LA, providing a complete site package for two phases of work. This included the construction of a 9-acre remote parking lot and sitework for the new casino building. RNGD self-performed a wide range of tasks, including mass grading, excavation, demolition, and utility installation and relocation. The scope also involved the export of unsuitable soil and the import of engineered fill to support substructure construction. For the remote parking lot, RNGD completed 172,500 SF of paving, 1,000 LF of storm drain, 900 LF of fire water main, 1,400 LF of domestic water line, 3,000 LF of curb and gutter, and 5,100 SF of concrete sidewalk. Over 114,000 CY of earth was moved (imported and exported), and a detention pond was installed, all within a $4,000,000 budget and completed in 60 days. On the main site, RNGD removed 12 acres of asphalt paving, completed 30,000 CY of earthwork, and installed 23,000 tons of limestone base. Other key work included 5,000 LF of storm drainage, 3,800 LF of water main, 1,400 LF of sewer force main, a sewer lift station, and detention ponds, all also delivered on-time and within budget! ?? The confluence chamber gates have been opened and the horses bolted – well, in our case, wastewater! It’s now flowing freely from our large interceptor pipes and into the Māngere processing plant for the first time. Opening the gates was no mean feat with the first weighing in at 3.5 tonnes and the second a mere half tonne. It’s been three years of hard mahi, complex engineering design and construction to get to this point. And, unlike our Central Interceptor Tunnel Boring Machine breakthroughs which are the mane attraction on our calendar, there was no cheering crowd at this do. But, hold your horses, this was still a hot to trot deal for our team as it means we’re a nose closer to section one of the Central Interceptor tunnel being ready to be operational by the end of this year. And, the end result ?? fewer wet weather overflows into waterways and beaches. Now, that’s gotta be worth a cheer! ??
