The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and Ulrik Pram Gad from DIIS - Dansk Institut for Internationale Studier provide valuable insights into the geopolitical significance of Greenland, helping to clarify some of the misunderstandings in recent debates. For example, he addresses one of Trump’s misconceptions about the Chinese and Russian ships with the following observation: Climate change is making the coast of Siberia more accessible, prompting Russia to revamp Cold War-era bases to protect its onshore natural resources. Russia is also developing the Northern Sea Route along the Siberian coast, with China's assistance due to Western sanctions. Much of the activity centers around Liquefied Natural Gas from the Yamal Peninsula in the East. While Russian and Chinese ships are indeed operating in the Arctic, they are far from Greenland, making it impossible to spot them—binoculars or not.
Difficult to correct in real time all the misunderstandings involved in the attempts at rationalizing Trump's designs on Greenland - but here I try to dismantle one of the most dangerous ones https://lnkd.in/dKXQ38PE

Great article from Elizabeth Ward Williams on #zoning code in #Atlanta and "neighborhood character," using Virginia Highlands (one of the most pleasant and walkable Atlanta neighborhoods, in my opinion) as a great case study. As she correctly notes, how on earth is it legal to build a two-story 5,200 SF single family home that rents for $24,000 per month (per MONTH!) and not, say, a two-story 5,200 SF quadplex with individual units that would actually rent at an affordable price for someone working in the area? What single family of three or four needs 5,200 SF—in an in-town neighborhood in one of the largest cities in the country, no less—anyway? Save that for your chateau in the country. Beautiful old duplexes, triplexes, and quadplexes like the ones pictured in this article are what give neighborhoods like VaHi so much charm and make them desirable places to live, but they're usually illegal to build in these places. Make it make sense. Our addiction to single-family homes has destroyed or come pretty close to destroying so many great American cities and their component neighborhoods with distinct characters, has turbo-charged suburban sprawl (which, if you've ever lived in or visited Atlanta, you will know is hell), and has sent housing costs through the roof, driving tragedies like homelessness. Americans will spend thousands of dollars on a European vacation and marvel at the beauty and livability of cities like Amsterdam and Paris but never dig into the root causes of why our cities can be so unpleasant and ugly by comparison. Changing zoning laws forbidding anything but single-family homes would go a long way toward fixing our cities and making them places where people can actually afford to live in a place they love.
"But if we change the zoning code, we'll lose our neighborhood character!" Are you sure about that? When Atlanta did a study, it found that a large portion of the city was noncompliant with zoning laws. To actually preserve neighborhood character, Atlanta needs to remove its modern restrictions.
