Early supports can play a vital role in reducing disability that can be associated with autism. Research conducted by Dr Jodie Smith, Lecturer in Speech Pathology, is investigating how early support in the form of parent-mediated therapy can help infants with a family history of neurodiversity. The 'Communicating and understanding your baby' study is a partnership between La Trobe’s Childhood Autism Team and CliniKids at the Telethon Kids Institute. “This study involves using a parent-mediated and video feedback approach to support young children’s social and communication development,” explains Dr Smith.?? "A parent-mediated approach is when the clinician works with parents to support and empower them to develop their infant’s early communication. This is a common practice in speech pathology, but relatively new to autism." Research has shown that children with a family history of neurodiversity are more likely to be neurodivergent themselves. “We have emerging evidence that parent-mediated approaches can support infants showing early signs of autism and children diagnosed with autism," explains Dr Smith. "However, we do not know the efficacy of these approaches when used with parents and babies with a family history beginning at birth.” “We hope the outcomes of this research will support new parents in understanding and encouraging their baby's early social and communication abilities and help us understand how early supports can benefit the family and child.” #LaTrobeAlliedHealthHumanServicesAndSport #LaTrobeUniversity #Autism?

Accuracy of the Screening Tool for Autism in Toddlers and Young Children in the primary care setting https://lnkd.in/e7qsQPk9 Not so much how good the instrument was at screening for (potential) autism, but one detail is also important: "Children misclassified by the STAT were older, had higher developmental and adaptive skills, and lower autism symptoms." Why? Because such a description of 'misclassified' also overlaps with some of the descriptions noted in the cases of 'loss of autism diagnosis' (i.e. when autism, or at least reaching autism diagnostic thresholds, is not lifelong). As with many different screening tools, it's generally taken as read that autism is a fixed and lifelong state. Only for some - about 10% - it's not: https://lnkd.in/esvWVvdC and some have suggested that its' more likely 30% not 10% where autism is non-persisting... https://lnkd.in/eemZufPZ

20% Increased ASD Risk for Kids with Autistic Siblings New research indicates that 20% of children with an older sibling diagnosed with autism are also likely to be diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), with this rate increasing to 36% when there are multiple siblings with ASD. The study highlights that gender, race, and maternal education significantly affect the likelihood of autism recurrence in families. It also emphasizes the need for extra developmental monitoring and early intervention for families with autistic children. This research underscores the importance of addressing disparities in healthcare access and support for all families affected by autism. ?????????? ???? ?????????? ?? ????????????????????????!

From 2020 to 2022, Octava Foundation had the opportunity to support a study led by NUHS to study the effectiveness of?an autism screening tool,?to identify children?who potentially could be on the autism spectrum. Following this study, the screening tool, the M-CHAT-R/F questionnaire is currently offered as part of the routine 18-month childhood developmental screening in all the seven polyclinics under NUP. ? The?study was successfully published in a leading peer-reviewed international scientific journal, Autism, and picked up by news channels recently, highlighting the tool's performance in local polyclinics: a 5-10 minute checklist for caregivers who bring their toddlers in on their developmental check-up,?can detect children at higher likelihood for autism with about 90% accuracy. ? With the tool facilitating systematic screening and earlier detection, more children on the autism spectrum could receive help at a crucial period of their development - to hone skills for language and cognition, which will benefit their later years at school, at employment, and at life.? ? Proving the local effectiveness of this checklist has led to successful adoption at these polyclinics, thus impacting lives of persons on the autism spectrum which stands at about 1% of our population. For philanthropic organizations like ours working to support equitable education and skills development, this is a winning testament to the importance of building local evidence. ? Belatedly, we congratulate Dr.?Aishworiya Ramkumar, Dr. Ruth Zheng?and the National University Polyclinics and National University Hospital teams on the successful delivery of this study. #Localevidence #Equitableskills #Autismscreening ? https://lnkd.in/giXXtm-h

If you are a philanthropic grant-maker or an individual giver seeking long term impact, one reliable strategy you could deploy is to support development of local evidence - the fruits of such an investment are many 1. It enhances the skills and capacities of local researchers, institutions, and organizations. You can view it as an investment in local infrastructure strengthening the overall research and development ecosystem within the community. 2. Context is KING , what has worked elsewhere doesn’t work everywhere.Interventions , policies and programs that are tailored to the needs and circumstances of the local population and grounded in the specific cultural, social, economic, and environmental contexts of a community have better probability of producing relevant outcomes. Why ? As the process of localisation can spark innovation by highlighting unique challenges and opportunities within a community. It encourages the development of creative solutions that are specifically adapted to local conditions, leading to more effective and sustainable outcomes. 3. Interventions and programs that are designed to address the specific needs of community members can promote inclusion and equity. At Octava Foundation we are actively learning through our grants that support research and capacity building , on how we as a grantmaker could ensure that we are building a base of evidence and practical knowledge in a way that meets local development priorities, enhances local capacity, and engages local actors as end-users of that evidence. #learningandeducation #SDG4 #evidenceforchildren #implementationscience

It was a delight to run an attention autism session at St Mary’s Primary School. Paying attention is a key skill for learning and a foundation block for building towards developing cooperation and communication skills as well as helping to reduce behaviours. We need to build the ability of the child with autism to focus their attention on the outside environment; learning what to focus attention on and what information to filter out. According to the creator of this method of intervention, Gina Davis, it offers an ‘an irresistible invitation to learn’. The aim is to create activities that are so appealing that the child’s attention is easily captured. By creating activities that are visually enticing this also changes the perception of an activity for a child as they feel less like they are following an activity they are being made to do and more that they are inspired to watch. These activities that inspire attention offer opportunities to learn joint attention and develop communication skills. Developing shared attention in a fun and engaging way helps to give opportunities for verbal and non-verbal communication, language cues and for spontaneous interaction in a group setting. Once children have learnt to focus their attention, and they have begun to associate the first stage as a fun, shared activity, then stage 2 aims to build their sustained attention to one activity for longer. Stage three builds on shifting children’s attention to their own individual participation before returning back to the group, which is a complex social skill that children with autism can find challenging. It can be necessary to remain on Stage 2 or 3 for some time to build these skills before progressing onto Stage 4, which involves transitioning to another activity and completing an independent task. In summary, Attention autism is truly engaging. Children to want to participate and it supports the development of key communication skills in a way they which builds positive associations around learning and group interaction.
