I went to bed last night still trying to unravel what I’m going to do in a post Ludogogy magazine world, and what changes I’m going to make in the other parts of my games-based learning practice. Overnight, I was offered a fabulous opportunity. I’ve been accepted on a Starfleet training programme, for fast-tracking exceptional candidates to a Starship captaincy. And it comes complete with mentorship from Kathryn Janeway. This is surprising in a number of ways. ??I don’t remember applying for this. ??I feel like I’m a good deal older than the usual candidates for such programmes. ????I’m pretty sure that most starship captains who originate on Earth have attended Starfleet Academy – which (it may surprise you to hear) I haven’t. ??There’s going to be some challenging logistics around a Janeway mentorship, what with her living in the 24th century, and that. Since I recently started keeping a dream journal, I’ve been really surprised that the frequency of my dreams has increased. In fact, I’m sure it’s just that I remember them more often, because my mind is being trained, by the very act of writing them down, to see them as important. But the other thing is, that I’ve come to view my dreams as an important kind of playful (self) learning. Very often now, I can clearly pick out insights relating to questions or problems I’ve been trying to tackle. It feels intensely playful as a practice, because it involves the exercise of creativity and imagination to gain these insights – and it’s fun!! It’s going to be ?interesting to reflect on what my subconscious is trying to tell me with this one. For starters, given that it’s MY dream, why on earth would my mentor be Janeway? I don’t want that! I want Picard, or Spock. Ideas and suggestions welcome – and if you’re going to say, ‘It confirms you’re a total space cadet,’ ?I’m way ahead of you ?? #EmployeeSpotlight - Emma Horner "Roll Up Your Sleeves and Get Dirty: Where Grit Meets Growth" Growing up between two cornfields in Ohio, I was the kid who came back from backyard adventures barefoot, my clothes covered in mud, holding a frog in each hand. I’ve always dove headfirst into anything that caught my interest, no matter how messy. I’ve found that my adventurous nature as a child has evolved into an eager demeanor as a young adult. Today, when I see a challenge at work, I see it as an opportunity to roll up my sleeves and get my hands dirty. Since joining GBR as an intern a year ago and converting to full-time this past May, I’ve received feedback that I catch onto things quickly. I don’t attribute my quick learnings to being a fast-learner by nature (definitely not the case, AP World History was a struggle for me), but rather my eagerness to jump in. Instead of waiting for tasks to be assigned to me, I’m constantly looking for areas where I can add value. When I encounter something new, I don’t wait for a training session to be added to my calendar; I dive into Confluence and take ownership of my learning. Calling attention to something that’s happening is one thing. Getting dirty in the data to understand why it’s happening is another. This learning curve of taking ownership in finding the cause of problems has accelerated my learning significantly. I’ve come to realize that when you shift your mindset from seeing situations as problems to seeing them as opportunities, you’re more willing to immerse yourself in the challenge and persevere. That kind of hands-on experience often teaches you more than a 30-minute training Zoom can. For me, growth doesn’t happen when your title changes or when you mark a task as complete; it happens in those messy in-between moments where you’re learning, building resilience, and finding new ways to bring value to the table. Embracing the eagerness I’ve had since childhood has helped me view challenges as opportunities. Roll up your sleeves and lean into the challenge– having grit during the messiest times leads to growth. #resilience #growth
