?? The Growing Complexity of Computer Science Education As universities worldwide see a surge in computer science (CS) majors, a complex problem emerges: how to effectively teach CS in a rapidly evolving technological landscape. At Stanford and MIT, CS major proportions have dramatically increased, reflecting a broader trend across North America. This shift not only places administrative pressure on universities but also prompts a reassessment of CS education's structure and goals. Institutions like MIT, Cornell, and UC Berkeley have responded by establishing dedicated colleges of computing, signifying computing's elevation to a domain of knowledge akin to law or engineering. However, this development also raises critical questions about computing's role in academia and society. Should computing dominate other fields, or should it serve them? The answer could shape the future of education and technology. ?? Like, share, and follow for more insights into the future of education and technology. #ComputerScience #EducationInnovation #TechTrends #AcademicEvolution #FutureOfWork

This is a very interesting article and a very important conversation. It brings up topics tangential to things that have been on my mind lately: the future of academia and the future of applied science jobs.
When I joined Cornell University in 1999, the university had just undertaken a bold experiment to create a new interdisciplinary unit including faculty from computer science, information science, and statistics and data science. That integration, envisioned decades ahead of its time, evolved from the understanding that?computation, information, and emerging technologies would transform virtually every area of academic inquiry and every part of society. I talked with Atlantic contributor Ian Bogost about that vision and how Cornell and other leading research universities are building colleges of computing, like Cornell Bowers College of Computing and Information Science, to support the growing and evolving field of computing.

Integrating two majors into one is becoming a trend. “Northeastern University (launched)… combined majors in 2001 with a series of programs combining computer science with other majors (often referred to as “CS+X”). “ They now offer “a whopping 270 combined majors across a variety of disciplines, with 8,401 students—approximately half the student body—enrolled in them this past fall.” #collegemajors #collegeplanning #highschoolstudents

If you are a CS Education researcher who leans towards understanding the cognitive underpinnings of student learning, then the Research Strand of the current CS4All solicitation may be your opportunity. In this branch of the solicitation NSF asks you to consider ways in which you “enrich the knowledge base governing how students build on what and how they learn computing throughout their education pathway” and to make sure to do so with a diverse group of learners. After all, the program name is “Computer Science FOR ALL” [my emphasis] So - budding or experienced cognitive scientists out there: check out this solicitation and start laying out your research plan, along with your evaluation plan. Both matter. And if you want to know more about the difference between Research and Evaluation, ping me. Happy Researching! https://lnkd.in/gnYR-JYt

In the face of surging student interest in computer science, universities are grappling with how to best structure CS education. The debate isn't just academic; it has real-world implications for the tech industry and society. As universities create dedicated colleges of computing, it's crucial they foster interdisciplinary collaboration, integrating fields like law, sociology, and the humanities. This ensures future tech leaders are not only skilled coders but also thoughtful, responsible citizens. Coding in education must evolve to include diverse perspectives, ensuring technology serves humanity positively. #CSEducation #CodingEducation #FutureTechLeaders #BridgingEducation #PathwayToCollege https://hubs.la/Q02JXWTP0

DPhil student Lia Yeh from Oriel College, Oxford has shared her experience of attending a Responsible Quantum Technologies workshop at the Institute for Technology Assessment and Systems Analysis (ITAS), in a new DPhil the Future article 'Making quantum accessible'. In the article Lia explains why it is important that quantum is made accessible to all, and shared her hopes that quantum science can become a subject anyone can learn and pursue. She shares her three main takeaways from the workshop, reflecting on her experience being on the youth panel, assessing quantum technologies in a deglobalising world. Lia also writes about her experience teaching programming for three years at a summer camp, reflecting on the gender makeup of the student groups she taught. She shares how this experience helped her to form her perspective on computer science. At the top right of the image there is a dark blue graphic of a clock with an arrow pointing right above it. In the background of the image there are faded blue dots and dashes that look like computer code. At the bottom right of the image there is a circular photograph of DPhil student Lia Yeh. #compscioxford #quantum

As the Dean of Northeastern University’s Khoury College of Computer Sciences, I have witnessed the rapid growth and evolution of our field. In this pivotal time, computer scientists are grappling with difficult and consequential questions regarding the technologies under our charge. The ongoing debate around the direction of computer science education has been a topic of concern for many, and Ian Bogost’s recent article in The Atlantic, “Universities Have a Computer-Science Problem,” brought new attention to these critical discussions.? ? My op-ed, "Computer Science Needs a Course Correction," addresses the need to rethink our approach to computer science education. I delve into the ethical, social, and interdisciplinary dimensions that are essential for preparing our students to navigate and shape the future of technology responsibly.? ? I invite you to read the full op-ed about how to address this thorny challenge and share your thoughts about the future of computer science education.?
