It's happening. Awards season is heating up! In the insightful words of my friend Jennifer Merrell, "If you've won an award this year, nominate someone else who hasn't." As I recently discussed in my article, "Recognition or Popularity: A Closer Look at Awards and Authenticity," https://lnkd.in/gaCgTcQJ, we must scrutinize our award culture and nomination practices more closely. Particularly as empowered women, it's time to challenge the status quo of self-aggrandizement and instead champion the recognition of others. Just yesterday, I had a conversation with someone who lamented, "it's always the same faces." This repetition may stem from reciprocal gestures within cliques and friendships. While acknowledging those within our immediate circles is important, as leaders and empowered individuals, perpetuating a "you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours" mentality does not foster true empowerment. Absolutely, there are individuals who consistently exceed expectations and deserve recognition on numerous platforms. Yet, are we actively taking deliberate measures to acknowledge the diverse array of contributors, rather than spotlighting only a select few? Our stages should be inclusive and representative, welcoming not just one, but many voices from various backgrounds – Asian, Black, Indigenous, Latina/o, LGBTQ, Muslim, White, Male, Female, and beyond. ?? Are DEI Initiatives the New “Scary Movie”? ?? Ever notice how some people react to DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) initiatives like they're stepping into a horror film? The fear is real—and it's unsettling. It’s as if the mere mention of diversity makes them think they’re facing some terrifying, unknown force. Suddenly, people of color, women, LGBTQ+ individuals, and other minorities are treated like characters from a scary movie—stalked, scrutinized, and often misunderstood. ?? But here’s the thing: DEI isn’t a nightmare; it’s an opportunity. It’s about creating spaces where everyone, regardless of their background, feels valued and included. Yet, the fear persists, often leading to knee-jerk reactions, alienation, and resistance. Let’s flip the script. Instead of seeing DEI as the monster in the dark, we should see it as the hero of the story—fighting for a better, more inclusive workplace where everyone can thrive. ????♀? Don’t let fear control the narrative. Embrace DEI, understand it, and realize it’s not about tearing anyone down—it’s about lifting everyone up. This week I had the honour to attended the WiHTL & Diversity in Retail Inclusion Summit with Compass diversity leaders, gaining valuable insights into diversity, equity, and inclusion (EDI) in the industry. Key takeaways included: ??Prioritising employee well-being with a customer-centric approach. ??Addressing the equity gap in satisfaction levels between men, women, and the LGBTQ+ community. ??Recognising that exclusion is difficult to identify and fix, but its impact is clear. ??The need to improve representation of underrepresented groups. ??Female leaders are better positioned to handle disruption and threats. ??The importance of employees’ lived experiences being heard by the board. ??EDI measurement relies on mature data practices.
