Recently, I was lucky enough to take part in a Polpeo #crisiscomms simulation session, courtesy of the PRCA and Speed Communications. It was a fantastic, if slightly stressful couple of hours aimed at improving your skills through the rehearsal of a simulated crisis that included public response and stakeholder management, all perfectly designed to test your ability to keep cool. Coincidentally, I have also been working on a couple of crisis preparedness/reputation management projects with clients of late, highlighting the importance of another key aspect of crisis comms: process. Some industries and businesses are more prone to high profile crises than others, but a clear crisis response plan is critical if you want to manage your way through a serious issue if/when it occurs. Clear lines of communication and responsibility enable effective judgement and when the pressure is on - and the pressure will be on, especially if it’s not a simulation! Process and rehearsal are key to effective issues management, but what else do you need to nail to get your crisis response right??
