How many senses do you have? If you said five, you’re not alone.?Unfortunately, you’re also not correct! Crazy right? I mean, we grow up being told we have five senses: sight, sound, smell, touch and taste.?These are the five that link us to the external world.?But we also have senses that involve the perception of the body's internal state: ?? Interoception is the sense of the internal state of the body. It includes the perception of hunger, thirst, heartbeat, and the sensation of fullness, among others. It's crucial for recognizing and responding to the body's needs. How often do you pause to listen to what your body is telling you? ?? Proprioception is the sense of the relative position of one's own body parts and the amount of effort being employed in movement. It enables you to know where your limbs are in space without having to look at them, allowing for coordination and balance. Ever tried closing your eyes and touching your nose? That's proprioception – our body's spatial intelligence at work. ?? Equilibrium is your sense of balance. It comes from your vestibular system, located in the inner ear, and is responsible for maintaining balance, posture, and the body's orientation in space. It helps to detect acceleration and deceleration movements as well as changes in head position. Not just for ballerinas or acrobats, but critical for anyone stepping out of bed – our balance is a sense we depend on every moment. ?? Nociception is your sense of pain.?This is the nervous system's response to harmful stimuli. In brief, it's the sense of pain originating from physical damage or potential damage to the body, such as cuts, burns, and impact injuries.?Without it, we’d miss one of my favourite lines from The Princess Bride – when the Dread Pirate Roberts exclaims: “Life **is** pain, Princess.?Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something.” ?? ?? Thermoreception is your ability to detect temperature changes, both externally and internally. Thermoreceptors in the skin help detect external temperatures, while internal thermoreceptors monitor the body's internal temperature, playing a critical role in thermoregulation. Ever notice you can sense the temperature change when entering a room? That’s thermoreception keeping tabs on our comfort zone. How do these internal senses impact our decision-making in professional settings? Can tuning in to them make us better leaders, creators, and thinkers? Share your thoughts or experiences where a “gut feeling” guided you to the right decision in your career. #HumanSenses #Interoception #BodyAwareness #ProfessionalGrowth

I work with sensory integration and, for years now, Dr. Ayres has suggested a 6th and a 7th sense — the vestibular and proprioceptive systems. Now, interoception is being discussed as the official 8th sense in our theory, but still — so many others theoretical chains have a lot more to speak on it, such as the Polyvagal theory. It’s still so early in progress though, hence the lack of tools to properly assess it on a perception and modulation level as an occupational therapist. There’re also lots of different functions to it and one can wonder if they can all really come down to just one system. Neuroscience has evolved to adopt proprioception together with the tactile system as the somatosensory system, which also encompasses pain and temperature sensations at this approach level. I’ve rarely seen recent research separate the two. At the end, it’s amazing to reckon how we speak separately on the sensory systems and how intimate they are as some commenters have pointed. I’m still searching for common ground through neuroscience where I can fully visualize Ayres’s evolving theory, but it’s been taking shape. It’s great seeing a colleague point to all of this and generate discussion on the topic, thanks for the indulging post.

I would add here another two senses: sense of intuition and sense of communication (ability to "read" other people, understand their intentions without a word being said, ability to communicate with other cultures without knowing the language). I think we use those two senses daily, especially in tense decision making process. Reaching beyond and seeing/ understanding more has always been an ultimate goal for the decision makers, so certainly we should ponder more on how we could put all the senses into action ??

PERCEPTION "Perception (from Latin perceptio?'gathering, receiving') is the organization, identification, and interpretation of sensory information in order to represent and understand the presented information or environment. All perception involves signals that go through the nervous system, which in turn result from physical or chemical stimulation of the sensory system. OTHER SENSES enable perception of body balance; acceleration, including gravity; position of body parts; temperature; and pain. They can also enable perception of internal senses, such as suffocation, gag reflex, abdominal distension, fullness of rectum and urinary bladder, and sensations felt in the throat and lungs." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perception

Fascinated by this - thanks for the great explanations! Well, I certainly know more about when I didn't listen to my gut feeling and with hindsight, that was the right decision making capability I should have gone with ?? Interoception - currently highly tuned into this and its helping me navigate some stressful times. Proprioception - honing this during my guitar playing in my band to basically play without looking at the strings so bringing out the emotion rather than the technicality Equilibrium - as a long term sufferer of motion sickness, doing spinning pole fitness was a challenge but helped to hone this sense. Taking more notice of my posture now, especially in how it gives me sense of stability particularly in public speaking. Nociception - currently perfecting my log splitting skills and remembering when I shaved my hand with the axe and had a near miss hitting my shin! The instinct to protect myself from harm is strong now due to the life responsibilities I have. Thermoreception - I can sense when rain is coming and it helps me make decisions for my horse's welfare. I sense temperature change when on the cusp of a crisis or danger. Not yet sure I understand that yet. Thanks for this opportunity to reflect!

It’s interesting, Joseph Devlin. But it is important to mention that although this approach may be one of the dominant ones, it is not necessarily the correct one; so it would be helpful to moderate the statement with “perhaps you're also not correct.” For example, some questions would be: Can't the so-called senses of external perception (exteroception) also register internal stimulation or movement (interoception or proprioception)? For example, when we hear the movements of our stomach, sounds of our locomotion and vocalization, when we see the movement of our limbs? Likewise, our inner ear movements cannot detect imposed external stimulation like when someone pushes us? Equilibrium is not a type of proprioception? And if so it only depends on the inner ear? How about the contribution of vision in this situation, probably even more dominant? (here is an interesting experiment: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4xenIulg_8) If thermoreceptors are responsible for thermoreception, which ones are responsible for nociception? Is there any special one? And what would be the receptors of the sensation of fullness? For each excitation of receptors is there a corresponding sensation? Are the senses channels of sensation?

Joseph Devlin , how do you think those internal senses impact our decision-making in professional settings? Can tuning in to them make us better leaders, creators, and thinkers? Pleaee share your thoughts or experiences where a “gut feeling” guided you to the right decision in your career. In my experience, the best decisions are made when one is able to be in touch with all of the senses and allow all the impressions to flow through a still mind, which when still, can provide truly positive results.

Where does intuition fit into this, I would it's close to interoception which I use quite a bit. How do I use it, I consider my sensation internally and check out the questions which I need to answer before I take action. Its a useful way to work, however it's not common practice in organisations.

yesterday i saw a ???? soldier cutting his throat to avoid the pain of wounds ; i guess Nociception exists thats why he was able to tune the mind for next phase ie death

Interoception is very interesting. I definitely do not pause enough to listen to what my body is telling me. I only visibly notice if I’m feeling very anxious and I feel it in the pit of my stomach. What actually is that feeling scientifically??
