Organizations, including the military, can only absorb change to a certain extent. That is until the change agent crashes against a monument. The wars in Ukraine and Gaza not only exposed the seismic chasms in the Russian military but also in the US and western militaries. Ukraine had to reinvent warfare as they were facing invasion. Someone on a career path of growth cannot afford to be told, “Is this the hill you want to die on?” It is a colossal waste to send a subject matter expert on process validation only to have a local yokel question the need for MVPs and OQs. There is a difference between learning new ways of doing things versus questioning basic principles. You don’t want to send someone’s soul to die in a toxic and reactive culture. Startups and freelancers are not tied by those chains yet must constantly reinvent themselves. The borg keeps absorbing these startups and chewing up and spitting out true agents of change. You can fire a person, or shoot down a drone. You cannot stop an idea or the dawning of a new age.
