Today, we honor the memory of those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. Thoughts go out to the victims, the brave first responders, and all those who faced this tragedy. It was surreal and humbling being at ground zero a few months ago.. #neverforget [email protected] #kester #legacybuilding #engineeringmanagement #constructionmanagement #builtinfrastructure #builtenvironment #reit #PrivateEquity #ITinfrastructure

This is where we are at. This nation. The one that invented the steel pan. The one that produced a Nobel prize winner. The one that nurtured notable scientists who made discoveries that changed the course of their respective disciplines. The one that has offered the world renowned artistes, authors, business leaders etc. This is where we are at. In Boardrooms, perceived or confirmed accusations of corruption abound. In companies, nepotism, cronyism & corruption keep under-skilled friends, family members & acquaintances in critical senior decision-making positions, while the doors of Opportunity remain shut for the qualified, the competent & those who are governance-oriented. In houses, doors are breached, locks broken and security systems disabled while persons get murdered, abused & assaulted in their own homes. In the streets, innocent persons are being slaughtered, while the not-so-innocent ones also meet the same fate before Justice can have her say in the courts of law. Online, the "Pretty Piper" local child pornography & cyber bullying Instagram pages are THRIVING once again. Yet... the fallacy remains. Right? We get to read these articles about murder, mayhem & madness .... and then, we shake our collective heads in disgust about the "state" this country is in. Then, we get dressed in our nice homes/condos/apartments, open our electronic gates, & drive our very nice vehicles as we head out to brunch with family, friends or a loved one. Why? Because some of us have the luxury of having enough means to fool ourselves into thinking that the decaying arm of crime can't or won't wrap its diseased fingers around our charmed lives.... Until it does. Aren't you tired yet, leaders of Trinidad & Tobago? Aren't you tired yet, law-abiding citizens of T&T? Aren't you tired of this macabre status quo? This Land of the Hummingbird. This place of enviable ethnic diversity. This country of incredible culinary, technical, manual & intellectual capacity.... THIS is what we have come to. Even as I type this, even more murders are occurring today. The Climate and Culture of inertia has led to Crime expanding as prolifically as mold does when it is in dark areas that are ideal for its spores to multipy. We have created the perfect enviroment for Dysfunction to thrive. Instead of buying funeral wreaths for co-workers who we lose to the negative elements in society, what if instead, we consider initiatives that reduce the chances of staff having to take time off to attend an unnecessary final rites ceremony? What if, we create some practical objectives to combat crime, or at least commit to consistently supporting those who do? Soon, a clarion call will be issued for the business community in this country & region to stand up against crime. I sincerely hope when that trumpet is sounded, the conscience of professionals in this land will not experience auditory failure. Caribbean Corporate Governance Institute #EnoughIsEnough

It’s important to understand the crime rate in a given area where you are looking to make a passive investment. For most, the rate of crime in the area is a huge determinant as to whether people want to live in that area. We all know the overused adage, “Location, location, location”... And nobody wants to live in an area where they and their family cannot feel safe, so you need to be aware of this metric when evaluating an investment opportunity. Here are a few reliable resources to gain access to crime data: 1) Trulia.com 2) Crimereports.com 3) Spotcrime.com. Be sure to check these out so that you are aware of what you are really investing in before you take the leap. #vettingsponsors #limitedpartners #commercialrealestate

Let's put politics aside for a moment to consider the tragic events of yesterday from a "people" perspective. Two people died yesterday. Two others are fighting to recover from critical injuries caused by gunfire. Two families are mourning today. Two others have had their lives turned upside down and don’t know if their loved ones will survive. Corey Comperatore, a rally attendee, died shielding his family from bullets. He was fifty years old. Thomas Matthew Crooks, the shooter, was killed by a Secret Service sniper. He was 20 years old. They were both young and had, until yesterday, many years of life ahead of them. I find it terribly sad that someone so young, practically a boy, had so much turmoil running through his head that he thought shooting a gun at a crowded rally was the only way to end it. Was killing another human being, while putting himself, and so many other innocent bystanders, in harm's way his only coping mechanism? What does it say about us as a society, that a twenty-year old could feel so much exasperation and have no way to work through it but to kill those he thought were causing it? We don't know Thomas Matthew Crooks' motive yet. We can speculate that he was just an evil soul with no regard for the sanctity of life in general. Perhaps he was troubled beyond caring about his actions or their consequences. Perhaps he was unstable and did not seek medical or psychiatric attention. Perhaps he hated Trump and thought he would be hailed as a hero by other Trump haters. Perhaps he was manipulated by others into doing what he did. The possibilities are many. We don't know. What we do know is that whatever caused him to shoot that gun yesterday cost him his life and has brought incredible suffering to the lives of the gunshot victims and their families. While the political aspects of this tragedy will dominate rhetoric over the next few weeks, the human aspects should not be overlooked. In the end, most of us want pretty much the same things in life, no matter our political ideals or affiliations. Those ideals and affiliations should not lead us to tragedy, death, or destruction. “We, the people” live in the one country in the world that, though not perfect in the execution of its ideals, strives to uphold our right, as individuals, to “life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness”. We can let politics divide us and conquer our souls, or we can try to work together to resolve our issues and move forward as a united nation, knowing that not doing so may jeopardize that right.

Anecdotally, post Covid crime rates have gone in the wrong direction in many cities and suburbs. When any of us are considering a place to live and raise a family, how many more important variables are there other than safety. In addition, when making business decisions and evaluating real estate syndication investments you need to take a crime right into consideration as to whether or not this is a place you yourself would be willing to raise your family.

This episode was extremely valuable. Thank you Eli Langer for this one. My takeaway. 1. Understand the loan - fully and detailed. 2. Ask for help as soon as anytbing isn’t going as planned. Don’t just hope to catch a break. Or chase the next deal to fix the last. Ask for help. 3. Yes, there can be prison time. Even if it was simply mismanaged. 4. Good people can do bad things. They still are, can be and can continue becoming good/better people. If you are dealing with real estate, partnerships, investments, lenders or investors listen and share. https://lnkd.in/gdyUqSMT
