Had someone ask what our culture was like at Amwins GR. The easy & quick response is "we work hard and play hard" Vague with multiple interpretations. This is said too often. The real answer I gave was that our culture is set from the top down by leadership and it's all about tolerance. What we tolerate(encourage) and what we don't tolerate. We encourage - owning mistakes - bringing new ideas to the table - having fun in the office - sharing concerns openly We don't tolerate - doing the bare minimum - hiding behind emails - gossip about others - constantly complaining about clients Yes, of course we have snacks, bubble hockey, a beer tap and a karaoke machine in house but those are perks, not "culture". We are looking for an intern in Grand Rapids this upcoming summer so if you are a rising Junior or Senior looking for a finance opportunity, send me a message. If you want to learn about what it takes to insure a Fortune 500 company and how we handle insurance transactions with London and Bermuda at a place with great culture, send me a message. If you want to lose in bubble hockey every Friday at 4:30, send me a message.

Dear network, I am thrilled to share that I recently completed the externship focused in On-Premise Sales & Marketing activities at Red Bull! This experience has been incredibly enriching and has provided me with valuable insights and skills. During this time, I had the opportunity to: Leverage Excel: I utilized Excel to visualize and analyze the performance of our on-premise clients, identifying which clients are excelling and which may need more support. Communicate Insights: I communicated these observations with the Red Bull team, shedding light on the factors contributing to the varying performance levels of different clients. Overcome Objections: By employing active listening and social proof techniques. This hands-on experience has deepened my understanding of sales & MK strategies paired with client relationship management. Incredibly grateful for the opportunity! #RedBull #Externship #OnPremiseSales #Excel #SalesStrategies #ClientRelations #ProfessionalGrowth #ActiveListening #SalesInsights

I didn’t receive the promotion. 4 other co-workers in the department applied for the role as well. They didn’t get it either. Instead, the company gave everyone who applied an elevated title and 2 direct reports. Except for me. I got nothing, not even a reason why I didn’t get it My boss didn’t know either and I received no answer from the Director of Real Estate. Before this, I felt like the company valued my talents. Afterwards, I knew for a fact that they didn’t. I went on to find a better place of employment. ____ When your company starts taking your talents for granted, Find a company that sees your worth.

HBR, it is too early on a Friday morning to be coming after my insecurities like this. ?? But also, thank you, Emma Waldman! This is a interesting article that is grounded in practical advice.
Don't forget: You bring a special skillset to the office (in-person or virtually) and a unique perspective. That's why you were hired.

Supervisor, if you are hiring summer workers, promise me that you will not act like the following examples ?? Reflecting on my own early summer career experiences, I have encountered situations where my appearance seems more important than my skills and motivation: 1?? At just 15, I was told my red hair didn't align with a restaurant's image. Rather than compromise my identity, I chose to walk away. ?????? ?? 2?? I applied for a job as a salesperson in a well-known clothing store, but because I had black-brown hair and all the other employees had white blond hair, it was clear that I didn't fit in. I was ghosted after the interview. ?????? 2?? It was summer time and I used self-tanner. This did not sit well with my supervisor, who scolded me in front of customers and loudly said that my skin was a dirty color. I told the senior managers about this and the story ended with me canceling my summer job contract. ???? ?? 4?? One summer, I worked in a clothing store. However, the fact that I had bought designer shoes (* using my summer job money and savings) for work was too much for my supervisor, who started teasing me and questioning who I really thought I was. That work experience was short-lived, because mentally being the object of criticism day after day was too heavy for me. ?? I want to remind you that you are good just the way you are and you don't need to change anything about yourself to please others. ? We must not forget about diversity. A person's appearance does not say anything about a person's competence or motivation. So let's give everyone a chance, whether the person had green hair or strong make-up. ?? ?? #DiversityIsPower #BeYourself

We are proud that some of these interviews Shawna is referring to are people for our team. Vulnerable facts about SVC: since Shawna Armstrong got involved with our hiring process about 18 months ago, we’ve hired 12 people. . Only 1 out of those 12 have quit. We currently have 12 people working for us and are hiring to fill two more roles of an HEO and experienced laborer. . We really struggled finding and retaining people that had values which aligned with our culture prior to her helping us build our disciplined hiring system. . And please note that bringing the disciplined side of the hiring process to us was one of the biggest parts. How many of us had/have a system, yet aren’t disciplined enough to use it? . We are finally working with 12 people that enjoy working together for a common vision, rather than people bringing their own agenda for SVC to work. If you know, you know. It’s real, and it’s not easy to remove from a company. . Hiring is unfortunately only one piece to the puzzle of business, however I’m grateful she helped us lock it down and helped us prioritize culture vs. skill set and experience. . Have a great week and go out there and get some! It’s time to put the ?? ??, the cold weather is coming! #SVC #business #lessonslearned #hiring
I've been busy interviewing a lot of people for Laborer and HEO roles. ?? I always ask, "What do you enjoy most and what are you good at?" The MOST common answer from young and old alike is some variation of, "I love working with my hands and seeing the finished product, seeing the transformation I helped create working hard with a team." So, make absolutely no mistake - there are lots of people who want to work, lots of people who love this work for what it is! Young people who think this work is cool and old-timers who want to stay in the game for as long as their bodies will allow. ?? I also always ask, "What do you enjoy least or find most challenging or frustrating?" ↖?↗? This is where the generations diverge. The younger ones hate being yelled at and being expected to sink or swim. They want to feel competent and to be successful. They want to learn. They crave mentorship. The older folks, reflecting on longer careers, most commonly express regret for lack of balance. They don't mind working hard, but long hours and travel have kept them from their families. They're proud to have been able to provide, but they've missed a lot, and can't get that time back. What this means for hiring: If you don’t have a mentorship culture, change it, and then promote the hell out of it! ?? If you haven't figured out how to balance schedules, find a way and then promote the hell out of it! ?? If you already have these things figured out, know that a lot of your competitors haven't yet. Promote the hell out of it! ?? If you dont, how will your future hires know? ???? ??: Banks Construction Company | Kayla Roberson ***** P.S. Time and tickets are running out for the November 4-6 Ariat Dirt World Summit in San Antonio. I promise, if you are in or around the industry, you don’t want to miss it. Use code Armstrong10 for discounted tickets. ?? #betterdirtworld #construction #hiring #recruiting #marketing #people
