An international team of scientists and engineers, led by RMIT University, has developed a #virus-inactivating material inspired by the surface of #cicadawings. The wings of these and other insects, such as dragonflies, contain minuscule spikes that kill #bacteria and #fungi by piercing them upon contact. Mimicking this design, the engineered material’s silicon nano-scale spikes can destroy or damage up to 96% of viruses that come in contact with it. This material is a welcome tool in our fight against the spread of infections in hospitals: it can coat surfaces and provide safer environments for patients and staff. During the next few weeks, trillions of cicadas will emerge in a rare synchronous event where both the 13-year and 17-year broods coincide. Research studies like these can remind us to pause and marvel at the diversity of disease-fighting weapons contained in nature, where public health allies can be found in the unlikeliest places. https://ow.ly/pZR450RsnhR
