I've known John V Willshire for over a decade, having first met at Silicon Beach in Bournemouth in 2013. He's one of the most fascinating thinkers I know. This is his latest talk. In it, he explores why design is not a superpower, how information is like light, not liquid, how you need to show people the system to help them change it, and how he has gone about rewilding his entire neighbourhood. It's a highly recommended 30 minutes. https://lnkd.in/eZ5NWJvM

Notes on Trumpspace: Politics, Aesthetics, and the Fantasy of Home - PDF: https://lnkd.in/gyU5jcTC In the wake of the 2016 U.S. Presidential election, considerable ink was spilled on the architecture and interior design of the buildings owned and inhabited by Donald J.?Trump. In an effort to understand the inner workings of America’s first real-estate-mogul-in-chief, commentators remarked on everything from the president’s fastidious taste in window dressings to the exaggerated floor counts boasted by many?Trump-branded towers. Notes on Trumpspace takes this discursive trend as a point of departure. It examines not only key examples of “Trumpitecture” but also works of film, fiction, and contemporary art that center on or otherwise illuminate the psychogeography of “super luxury” real estate. Engaging closely with current political debates, the book takes a critical approach to mainstream liberal reactions to the Trump presidency. It argues that the fascination and horror Trump has provoked is owing in part to the way he lays bare the obsession with status, self-branding, and achievement-at-any-cost that has been part and parcel of the broader neoliberal ethos. Finally, it analyzes the January 6, 2021 storming of the US Capitol through the lens of spatio-political theorizations of settler colonial power and conceptions of home and homeland. A genre-defying work of political and aesthetic inquiry, Notes on Trumpspace is a sustained investigation into the relationship between the built environment, late capitalist fantasy, and national identity. It asks what it means for current and future understandings of home and dwelling that this era’s most notorious peddler of high-end real estate succeeded in peddling his way into the White House in 2016. #architecture #criticism; #Trump; #politics; #January6 #insurrection; #contemporaryart; #superluxury #realestate #aesthetics #fantasy #home

"Fields like #DesignThinking, user experience, industrial design, graphic design, #architecture, design research, and many more operate within a #hierarchy of creativity. Design professionals build their value system and decide what artifacts should expand to the rest of the world, and what shouldn’t. Conversely, there’s an important cultural difference made between design, as a discipline that shapes our world, and craft, a label attached to #local, #indigenous, and #communal forms of creativity — no matter their genius, their contextual practicality, or their community engagement. [..] In the #GlobalSouth, buildings that draw on local or Indigenous materials and practices are labeled “#vernacular” or “traditional”, whereas in the #GlobalNorth they’re known as “#heritage”. [..The author argues that] rich, white, educated, male, Western people audit which objects can be appropriately subsumed into capitalist logics, and the rest of the world, who’ve been designing for millennia before any version of academic #canon, build assets that are considered unvaluable and proto-modernist. A core part of #liberatorydesign means breaking these hierarchies, and relearning how folks can learn from unique and ever-lasting forms of creativity." Many corollaries and resonances when conceiving #FoodSystemTransformation!

Very cool to see Sacramento recognizing the architectural significance of Eichler homes! ??????? And to make this a proper LinkedIn post, I can't help but consider the parallels between these iconic mid-century homes and #productmarketing. Without further ado, welcome to my TedTalk. ???? User-Centric Design: Just like great products solve user problems, Eichlers addressed the needs of the post-war middle class. They offered affordability, open floor plans, and a connection to nature. Wide Appeal & Unique Identity: While Eichlers have a recognizable style, each has its own variations and floor plans to cater to different preferences, similar to how products offer a core experience with options for customization. Selling the Experience: Eichler didn't just sell houses; they sold a lifestyle. Their marketing wasn't just features — it showcased seamless indoor/outdoor living, connection to nature, and a sense of community and connection. Today's product marketers understand the power of selling the experience, not just the features. Innovation & Efficiency: Eichler homes were built using innovative techniques and materials to be affordable and efficient. In product marketing, data and customer insights are used to create products that are effective and accessible. I love how Eichler's approach to architecture shares principles with successful product marketing strategies. Both prioritize user needs, create a unique brand identity, and focus on the user experience. ??????
