Bootstrapped one day, $22M Series A the next. Here’s the handy step by step guide we’ve been following to make this happen: 1. Quit university in your very last semester 2. Just before you leave, raise funds by selling a bunch of t shirts with a modified university logo that says QUiT instead of QUT 3. Patent a sugar packaging solution (with said funds) and turn down your first offer cos it’s obviously going to take over the world 4. Realise it’s not going to take over the world 5. Start an agency and build it for 5 years 6. Realise you quit university to create a product, not an agency 7. Set up a product incubator within the agency 8. Work with the team over several years to build dozens of products 9. Finally turn what the agency is good at (user research) into a product 10. For the next 6 years, build an incredible team and scale product - bootstrapped 11. Bring on the best clients in the world 12. Partner with Australia’s greatest VC team, Airtree 13. Take over the world Although this merely marks a midpoint in our huge journey, it’s a good moment to quickly reflect. Thanks Dre Zhou for completing so many of the above steps with me - particularly Step 1. Huge appreciation also to Scott Goleby - impossible to do it without you, the Askable team who are truly unstoppable, the agency team that helped shape it early days, Colleen Gao, Jonathan Peck & more who packed up their lives to launch our London and Chicago offices, my mentors & advisors, our unwavering customers and of course John Henderson & Sid Kasbekar for the belief. Here’s to Step 13 ????
