Here’s how two high-schoolers, Kei Hayashi and I, came to manage $150,000 for our first cohort and $300,000 overall in our “mini venture capital fund." Back in September 2023, I grew frustrated seeing the lack of serious capital and student-friendly funding sources for young entrepreneurs. The dreams of ambitious 15-year-olds to become the next Elon Musk or Steve Jobs, to innovate and make a positive impact, were getting held back by limited resources. That’s when I met Kei Hayashi through Astra. Initially, we connected because Kei agreed to support a hackathon we were hosting. Soon, we found we shared the same values and goals, and we decided to tackle this challenge together. By leveraging our networks, and after two months of rigorous effort, we raised $150,000 for our first cohort and $300,000 overall. We started strategising our unique approach to funding, our investment thesis, brand style, and marketing and officially launched LocalHost in November 2023. Soon enough, we partnered with more than 20 companies like GitHub, Notion, HubSpot, Dropbox DocSend, Brex, Webflow, etc to join our perks program worth $40,000 for each LocalHost fellow. Since then, we’ve funded a first-rate group of student founders through both equity investments and non-dilutive grants , like: Andrew Nijmeh: a 15-year-old from Toronto, Canada, building a B2B connectivity platform for transportation data Valkyrie Holmes & Amanda S. : two 21-year-olds building an assessment tool in Climate-Insurance tech Jayant R.: working on an AI tool to improve Speech-Language Pathology Surya Maddula: A 17-year-old building a pantented-system for Open-Air Active Noise Canceand many many more... Throughout the journey of building LocalHost from scratch, I’ve learned the importance of building genuine relationships—a core value in venture capital—and the power of showing up every day. Consistency is key. It’s been a pleasure seeing how, over the past year, we’ve created a space where young founders can pursue their dreams without sacrificing them due to lack of resources. Expect to raise $10.1M in your Series A based on the latest Q2’24 data Here's a simple Use of Funds test to check when you're ready... ?? Can you use that $10.1M to add $10M in revenue in 24 months? Because that'll put you on the Venture Scale path → going from $1M to $100M in 7 to 10 years Meaning after you hit $1M in revenue you'll triple to $3M, triple to $9M the year after that and double to $18M the year after (and keep doubling to $100M) Typically you'll raise your Series A in those first few 3x years → It used to be around $1M in revenues → Now it's closer to $3M But whenever you raise, a simple way to think about your use of funds is can you add $10M in revenue in less than 24 months? And hopefully you’re also thinking → $10.1M is still a lot of money to spend in a capital efficient way → so we need to make sure we’re spending it on the right things → and not burn through our equity on the wrong things Here's my take on that seed to series A transition… 1?? Ideally you raised your ~$3.5M seed round because you can show happy customers and a repeatable case study If not, then hopefully you proved that out quickly afterwards 2?? Then you used that ~$3.5M seed money to figure out a repeatable & scalable way to find more of those ideal customers Typically these GTM experiments take 18-24 months to figure out Which happens to line up with Carta's Q2'24 median time between seed & series A of 24 months But it's the "repeatable" & "scalable" that are the key words above 3?? Because the use of funds goal for your $10.1M Series A is to add $10M in new revenue in 24 months So that you can stay on the expected Venture Scale curve And you’ll set yourself up for your Series B …before burning through that full $10.1M Series A And the only way to add $10M in 24 months is to shift out of experimentation mode (your seed use of funds) and into execution mode (your series A use of funds) Meaning you’ve already figured out a way to find, win, deliver value and retain customers in a “repeatable” and “scalable” way So that you can hit the ground running with your $10.1M Series A Hopefully this gives you a work back plan on what to focus on with your seed capital so you're set up nicely for your Series A ?? Many startups bootstrap during early stages to prove their concept and retain equity. When to Seek External Funding: 1. You’ve validated your product-market fit and need capital to scale. 2. You require resources to outpace competition. 3. You’re expanding into new markets or launching innovative features. Key Funding Options: ? Angel Investors: Early believers who invest small amounts in return for equity. ? Venture Capitalists (VCs): Larger, strategic investments to accelerate growth. ? Crowdfunding: Engaging your audience to fund your product in exchange for perks or equity. ? Grants/Loans: Non-dilutive funding options, especially for social or tech innovation. Example in Action: In its early days, Mailchimp, a now-global email marketing platform, was entirely bootstrapped. The founders, Ben Chestnut and Dan Kurzius, used revenue from their web design agency to fund its development. By focusing on customer feedback and sustainable growth, Mailchimp avoided external funding for nearly 20 years. Eventually, their approach paid off when the company was acquired by Intuit for $12 billion in 2021. Their story highlights how bootstrapping can lead to long-term ownership and success. The Balancing Act: Understand what you’re trading. While investor backing can fuel rapid growth, it often means sharing decision-making power. Here are some of the key takeaways Fundraising challenges: It can be increasingly difficulty to secure funding as investors are always looking for high revenue and top growth metrics, especially compared to before. Bare this in mind along with the fact there may be increased competition in the space such as funding now shifting to the new craze AI. Also be aware of who you spend time reaching out to, don’t get discouraged if you get rejected and keep focusing on building and improving your product every step of the way before you reach out again to potential investors. Present your project: Your profile, image and presence in the social world determines your product same way as it would for yourself. Let the correct brand image do the talking and build a social media presence that attracts investors, indicating a clear next step for participants. Funding paths: Typical funding paths for most startups begin with personal savings, followed by grants, accelerator funding, angel investments and eventually larger rounds. The visibility of successful founders in media is not representative of the norm, which is often a gradual and challenging process. Know these differences: There are differences between VCs and Angel Investors because VCs invest other people's money and are more public in their marketing efforts. Angel investors can be described as serial/professional investors and are often opportunistic. First impressions count, so to approach them, assess the suitability of an investor's social media through profile and activity and then look for an angle or opening to connect, adopting a soft approach to initiate contact. 2 days left to apply for "Pitch & Raise Bootcamp" and here's a bit of insight in Investor facing narratives, which will be my core topic at the bootcamp. ?? Working with 500+ startups over the last 8 years I mostly see the following pattern - a startup is either scheduled to pitch at an event or has created one of the first versions of a Pitch deck to be sent to potential investors. The deck usually ticks the right boxes following a common structure, i.e., ? problem, ? solution, ? traction etc. BUT... either reciting the pre-written script or sending the deck via email, the founder usually expects the audience to "do the math", i.e., understand: - what is the potential of this? - why now is a great time to invest? - why should the investor care? - ... In many cases a core message and some of investor facing proof-points are missing. This makes me think that founders either don't realise that pitches should be prepared and adjusted for various audiences (customers, partners, future employees etc) or that they don't understand, how the investors think, what green and red flags are they looking for. At the Bootcamp we will be talking about various fundraising materials that you should have in your fundraising journey, but also what are some typical "Investor facing narratives" that you could base your pitch deck upon, thus giving a rather clear and proactive answer to some of the questions investors most likely will have. In early stage, the most typical narratives are related to: - team & expertise - market gap - great initial traction or proven interest from the market There's of course more...
