A few weeks ago, I had the amazing experience of attending the #PerspektywyWomeninTechSummit2024 in Warsaw. The entire conference was incredible, from the dedicated organizers to the companies, academic institutions, and the inspiring public. As a founder, I understand the challenges women face in various industries, and witnessing this community's efforts to promote inclusivity fills me with hope and empowerment. I'm grateful to be part of this vibrant community. We need more women in tech! Unfortunately this will not realize unless we are able to increase diversity of the talent pool and encourage girls to consider education and career in tech! I am very excited to be part of the solution as I took on the role of country lead for Finland with Girls in Tech Nordics! Did you know that only 23% of personnel working in technology industry in Finland are female, 29% in IT specifically (source Teknologiateollisuus statistics). A diverse world needs tech made by diverse people. The gender gap in tech can be traced back to education, with fewer female student having a career in technology promoted to them. With missing encouragement and role models we are failing to engage the future female talents to the industry. I am incredibly proud that Girls in Tech Nordics, a movement across the Nordic countries, was recently awarded the Initiative of the Year by Nordic Women in Tech Awards. We are bringing together students and technology companies to provide the students with facts and insights on what kind of careers tech industry has to offer and to hear inspiring career stories of women in tech today. Most rewarding feedback has been that when we ask in the beginning of an event who have considered a career in tech only a few shy hands raising compared to 90% of hands up at the end of the session! Girls have said they feel that they have been invited as insiders, recognized as valuable future talents. This work will bear fruit 5-10 years but if we do not put in the effort the diversity challenge will prevail. Time to take action is now! We are already busy planning sessions for spring and autumn 2025 and we are looking to expand our reach to multiple new cities. If you want to get involved reach out and be part of the solution! Such programs are giving women the tools & confidence to thrive in technology & other industries, closing the long-standing gender gap. It is nothing short of admirable to see the progress they have made & the determination with which they seek knowledge. But as we celebrate this progress, it begs the question: Where are the initiatives for men? The world of technology is highly competitive, & as women continue to break barriers, it becomes increasingly evident that men, too, need spaces to retool, relearn, & upskill. It is not about creating competition but about ensuring that everyone—men & women alike—has access to opportunities that help them grow & contribute meaningfully to society. Today, more women are occupying powerful positions & creating wealth, but we cannot overlook the quiet struggle of many men who feel left behind in this fast-changing world. The rapid transformation in industries like technology, driven by artificial intelligence, data science, cybersecurity, & software development, demands constant learning. Yet, initiatives for men to thrive in this evolving landscape remain scarce. This is a heartfelt appeal to influential and successful men in tech: It’s time to lead a movement that empowers men to stay relevant in today’s tech-driven world. You have the resources, networks, and platforms to create something extraordinary—mentorship programs, fellowship opportunities, or community-driven initiatives that give men access to the knowledge and tools they need to succeed. Imagine the impact of a Men in Tech Fellowship—a program designed to equip men with in-demand skills, foster innovation, and encourage personal and professional growth. Imagine the mentorship it would provide to young men, guiding them to thrive in leadership, entrepreneurship, and cutting-edge technology. This is not about competition between genders but collaboration for a balanced future. As women rise, let men rise too—creating a society where respect, dignity, and opportunities are mutual and abundant.
