A couple weeks ago I sat with Amalia Verzola for an interview for HERA - The European Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority of the European Commission about the impact of medicines shortages?on patients. In a nutshell, shortages of medicines undermine patients’ fundamental right to equitable access to safe and quality healthcare and, importantly, lack of availability of medicines when patients need them, can have life-threatening consequences. Therefore, we must ensure that the management of medicines shortages addresses the needs of patients. Patient organisations have a crucial role to play in tackling medicines shortages, such as: > Reporting shortages. > Trust building through communication campaigns with public health authorities about challenges in the supply chain. > Early communication to patients about shortage incidents and mitigation measures. It must be said (because these are important steps made by the Commission), there is a word in there expressing appreciation for HERA's involvement of patient organisations through its Civil Society Forum and working groups, and for the role of patient organisations in the Critical Medicines Alliance. *SURVEY* ?? In spring 2024, we interviewed patients and their associations as well as health care providers, those responsible for patient contacts at companies, government agencies and hospitals about the value of #patientassociations. Four main conclusions from our survey ??: ?? Patients and healthcare providers think patient associations should be equal partners in healthcare. ?? Healthcare providers are less familiar with the services patient associations can provide to patients, medical practice or health policy, but they consider them very important. ?? Patients and healthcare providers are convinced that patients guided by patient associations will have faster and better health outcomes. ?? Most respondents agree that patient associations should be given the resources to play their role in a quality manner.
