Thoughts on #GivingTuesday Giving Tuesday is an important reminder of the value of giving back. Just having done my year end donations on my IPad from my Fidelity Charitable Donor Advised Fund, I thought I’d share a few principles that guided my giving. 1) Supporting organizations that I volunteer for or serve on their boards. Most major funders look for 100% participation from board members. Consider using as matching gifts that help encourage others. 2) #givelocal. Directly to local nonprofits supporting those in need or to local community foundations who will have a good sense of needs and worthy organizations. 3) Bolstering organizations helping populations vulnerable to bad policy choices from the incoming administration and/or supporting democracy. 4) Journalism. Local, public purpose and advocacy. We need the 4th estate now more than ever. 5) Organizations helping improve economic mobility including broad access public and non-profit higher education institutions. 6) Engaging my children by supporting them in causes they care about. All reinforced by encouraging friends to do the same. We all can do our part.

Traditional families are decreasing and the future implications concerning contested charitable legacies are scary. Blended families are increasing at a worrying rate and I am one of them! This is the focus of my talk at the Smee and Ford #smeeandford Excellence in Legacy Administration conference on 11th February with the brilliant Paul Hewitt from #withersworldwide With a number of global clients I have beeen researching statistics. It ranges from 9% of families in France to 40% (!) in USA with the U.K. in between. The only common factor? There is a frightening year on year increase in every country I have researched so far. Great legacy fundraising relies on building trusting relationships and a worrying number of legal advisers are increasingly ‘anti charity’ due to template communications. "Are you aware of the minimum distribution requirements for your Private Ancillary Fund (PAF)?" Each year, a PAF must distribute at least 5% of its net assets to eligible Deductible Gift Recipients (DGRs), or a minimum of $11,000 if 5% of the assets fall below this threshold. However, no distributions are required during the PAF's first year of operation. PAFs can only distribute to DGR Item 1 entities, such as public benevolent institutions, educational bodies, or cultural organisations - ensuring donations go towards impactful causes that align with community needs. ?
